Starving
~Chapter Eleven(Starving)~
"Sir? Hello?"
Brady snapped back to reality. The phone was in his hand, he was in his office, and he had heard that Chloe could die. It was all real, and the pain he felt was becoming more and more apparent by the second. He suddenly became aware that the doctor on the other end of the line was speaking to him.
"Huh? I'm sorry, what did you just say?" he asked.
"It's not that easy, Mr. Black. I'm afraid that we need your signature on our paperwork before we can do any procedure."
Brady sunk into his chair. "I'm in Salem, Illinois right now. It'll be hours before I can make it there," he whispered, shocked and broken.
There was a deafening silence on the other end. "You're in Illinois?" the doctor finally inquired.
"Ye
"
"I see…"
"Is there anything I can do? From here? You can't let her die just because I'm hours away! There has to be something you can do!"
The tears were falling freely from Brady's eyes now, knowing that no matter what he did, it may not be good enough to save her. For once in his life, Brady felt the bitter pangs of true, unadulterated love lost coursing through his veins. He couldn't deny the emotions that moved him now were caused by his love for Chloe. Unfortunately, it was a revelation that could come too late.
"Sir? Are you okay, sir?" the doctor yelled into the phone.
"I'm here, doctor."
"There is one way…do you have a fax machine?"
"Yes…"
"You could fax your signature and a copy of your driver's license to us, we'll do the procedure, and you can sign the real documents as soon as you get here in person."
"I'll have to get off the phone with you, but stay nearby. It'll only take a few minutes," Brady said eagerly.
Hope and joy pounded in his head as he copied down the fax number of the emergency room. He scanned a copy of his license and signature and quickly faxed them to the number. Then he telephoned Belle to tell her to pack his things. She demanded an answer, but he hung up on her before the words fell on his ears. He used his cell phone to call his father's private jet and left his very surprised secretary gaping after him.
Finally, he was aboard the plane with Belle beside him. She looked worried and pale as he explained what happened to Chloe. In fact, she looked absolutely horrified.
"Some child just…stabbed her?" she gasped.
"Apparently. The knife punctured her right lung and she needs emergency care. However, my name is on her insurance as next of kin. Go figure."
Belle held her face with her hands. "I'm so sorry. This is all my fault. If I hadn't jumped to conclusions…she wouldn't have gone to Kansas City…she wouldn't have been there this morning…she wouldn't have…Oh god, Brady, I might have killed her!" she sobbed.
Brady silently agreed with her, but put his arms around her just the same. Belle had been going through her own private kind of hell. But then again, so had all of them. Living the last few months without Chloe had been like starving. Brady could think of her, feel her, taste her, smell her…but when he realized she was gone, the ache inside of him grew with each memory. He knew what had to be done to keep from losing her again, regardless of price. But how to accomplish what he really needed would be hard work.
Looking down, he saw that Belle had fallen into a restless slumber in his arms. He bent down slowly to give her light hair a quick kiss. Then, he dozed in the uncomfortable jet seat until the plane touched down.
