The hum of a helicopters’ blades break the silence of a quiet Kansas evening. The silent man looks towards the sky as the great black beast comes closer and closer to him and settles on the bull eye that was its intended target.

Holding his hands over his eyes to help stop the wind that were tearing at his eyelids, he takes a deep un-needed breath and slowly walks away heading towards the entrance of LutherCorps’ plant in Smallville.

Reaching the door, without turning around he walks down the hallway towards a set a stairs, taking those stairs to the second floor and turning left at the Employees Lounge, he opens a hidden door that is camouflaged by the water-cooler.

Looking around the room that he hasn’t stepped foot in in over twenty years, he notices that nothing has really changed. It was as though someone had captured time in a bottle and held it still for over two decades.

A sudden whoosh of air entering the room shakes him out of his reverie letting him know that he was no longer alone and he turns around to face the person entering the room.

He eyes the newly arrived warily and realizes that he is being observed in the same manner.

Never one to let dust gather the man standing at the door initiates the conversation.

“Jonathon.”

“Lionel.”

“You look….” They both smile sheepishly when they realize that they were about to ask the same question at the same time.

Lionel Luthor uncomfortable with the situation and being in close quarters, especially these close quarters with the occupant in question is determined to get the situation over and done with as soon as possible.

“You look good Jon.” Now that there are no cameras or eyes around, he lets the smile on his mouth reach his eyes.

“Thanks, so do you.”

“Must be all of that Kansas sunshine.”

“Could be.”

“Or your wife’s cooking.”

Startled by the mention of his wife. “Probably, Martha is a great cook.”

Nodding his head in a disinterested fashion. Lionel goes to say something but is suddenly bombarded with the amount of change in the man in front of him. Silently they stare at each other, memorizing and noticing every change, every new wrinkle or freckle that now adorns the body of the person in front of them, a body that they once knew as well as their own.

Laughing nervously as the tension in the room escalates; Jonathon attempts to break it by joking lightly. Sweeping his eyes around the room. “Never thought we would be back here.”

Left unspoken were ‘considering what happened last time we were here.’

“I know, neither did I.”

Walking over to a statue that graced the only counter in the room. Fingering it lightly, “Why did you keep it.”

Pretending ignorance, Lionel arches a brow at him. “Keep what?”

“Don’t Lio…”

Stiffening as though he was struck, “don’t call me that, you can call me whatever you like, liar, murderer, thief, even bastard, but, never call me that again.”

Swallowing past the lump in his throat, Jonathon shakes his head in understanding, “about our sons.”

“It can never happen.”

Smiling sadly, “I know. So what are we going to do?”

Looking up at Jonathon, “what can we do?”

Snorting softly, but at the way Lionel narrows his eyes at him, Jonathon realizes that he was heard. “The mighty Lionel Luthor, doesn’t know what to do? That has got to be a first.”

“It does happen sometimes,” Lionel snaps at the now glaring man.

Jonathon looks at Lionel dumbstruck. If someone had told him that ‘The Lionel Luthor,’ would ever admit to not knowing how to do something, he would have called them a liar and bet his farm on it. Calming his body down he says softly, “I thought you knew how to handle everything.”

Lionel lets out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding, “Except how to mend a broken heart.”

Closing his eyes as a wound that was deeply buried start to fester again and the pain starts to come back through clenched teeth he says, “Don’t….”

Before he could finish Lionel interrupts him, “Don’t what?”

“This has got to be about the kids, and only the kids, anything else should stay where it is.”

Looking at Jonathon quizzically, “I don’t know what you are talking about.”

Staring at Lionel and instinctively knowing that the man in front of him is lying, something he wished he knew how to do many years ago, he gives him a way out. “Okay, my mistake…so what are we going to do about the kids?”

“How long has it been going on.”

“I don’t know.”

Closing his eyes and running his hands through his hair, missing the melancholic look on the face of the man in front of him, “It couldn’t have been that long, Lex has only been here for four months, at least if your son,” staring pointedly at Jonathon, “was 15 there would not be a problem, you could have threatened Lex with the law and then I would have had a reason to come in and take him away.”

“That’s your answer to everything isn’t it, come in and take it away.” The disgust in Jonathon’s voice evident. “Anyway, that isn’t the case here, Clark’s birthday is next week, he’ll be seventeen then, the Laws of Consent don’t apply, the only thing we have is Kansas’s Sodomy Law and barring being a hypocrite,” staring at Lionel daring him to say something, “I won’t do that, to Clark or Lex and Martha wouldn’t allow it.”

“Then we’re stuck aren’t we, I can’t force Lex, you can’t threaten Lex, so what is our other option?”

“We could make them fall out of love.”

Looking at Jonathon incredulously, “You think it’s that serious? It’s too soon, it can’t be love already.”

“Why not, we fell much quicker.”

“I thought we weren’t going to mention that.”

Shaking his head, “No, we shouldn’t but in hindsight maybe we should. So tell me LIO, how do you do it? Because I want our kids to fall out of love, but I don’t want them to hurt forever, so tell me how to do it, how did you do it, how did you fall out of and forget your first love?”

The silence in the room is deafening. For a long time the only thing that can be heard is the sound of laboured breathing. Taking a hard look at Jonathon, HIS Jon, Lionel Luthor does something many would accuse him of being incapable of doing. Staring the lover he lost so many years ago in the eye, and gearing up his psyche to let the one of the two people left on Earth that he cared for a glimpse into his heart.

“You don’t.” And with those words, he leaves a stunned Jonathon standing in the room he built many years ago as one of their lovers’ lair, without looking back.
