Introduction
It’s often been said…what’s in a name? A person’s whole sense of identity and self worth lies in their name. And what kind of damage can be done when a person is denied their rightful name? Men are not all created equally as we would like to believe…and it is with that truth that we realize men behave differently when they have certain responsibilities…such as fatherhood…thrust upon them unexpectedly. One man in particular, Sir Thomas Boleyn was guilty of that. Not where his first three children were concerned. No…they were the proud bearers of the Boleyn family name because he was married to their mother. But his fourth and therefore utterly unknown child had not been given such an opportunity. And she had been kept safely tucked away in the province of Avonlea, England where her half brother and sisters would know nothing about her existence.
Thomas Boleyn had had an illicit affair with a beautiful young woman at court. Her name had been Lady Elizabeth Selwyn of Avonlea and she had been a lady in waiting to Queen Elizabeth of York. Their affair had started off as innocently as one could but quickly turned torrid and full of unbridled passion that soon resulted in the unexpected birth of their daughter. Elizabeth had been thrilled at the arrival of her baby daughter, but Thomas Boleyn chose that moment to show her that he was not at all the wonderful man she had believed him to be…and he left her. He left her pregnant and alone…about to give birth. She named her daughter Claire but because of Thomas Boleyn’s selfishness was forced to let the whole world believe that her daughter was a bastard child. Thomas Boleyn had outright refused to allow Elizabeth to give their daughter the Boleyn name.
He abruptly ended their romantic affair and sent her back to Avonlea telling her to tell no one that he was the father of her child. So Elizabeth had raised her daughter as Claire Selwyn. She had just recently turned sixteen and her mother had thought she was the proper age to go to court. So she had written Queen Katherine of Aragon and asked for Claire to be made one of her ladies in waiting. Elizabeth was relieved when she received Katherine’s letter accepting Claire as her newest lady in waiting. Since she had been terribly ill for quite some time the news couldn’t have come at a better time. Elizabeth knew that her time was running thin and that her life was drawing to a close so her time with her daughter was quickly dwindling. When the morning came for Claire to head to King Henry the 8th and Queen Katherine of Aragon’s palace Hampton Court Elizabeth knew that she had to tell her the truth about her father.
Claire stood out in the hall nervously tugging at the tight bodice of her sage green dress as she waited to go in and see her mother. The dress was heavy and horribly tight. The bodice was too tight…almost so that it felt as if it were slowly suffocating her. It had a square neckline and the bodice pushed so intensely on her ribcage that it pushed her young perky breasts up so high that the tops of them were straining against the neckline. The bodice was embellished with black lace and some onyx jewels that had been sewn into it as well. Around her slender neck she wore an onyx cross and her thick dark brown hair had been swept up and pinned with onyx encrusted combs. Only a few wispy ringlets hung down framing her face and trailing down the back of her neck. The black shoes she wore were painfully uncomfortable and they made her feet ache.
Dressing up was one thing…but this just seemed utterly ridiculous. Glancing into the mirror that hung in the hallway Claire looked at her reflection. She had grown up into a beautiful young woman with thick dark brown hair and captivating blue eyes that could hold almost any man or woman’s gaze. Her skin was flawless and the perfect shade of alabaster. She had many of the more prominent young men in Avonlea’s attention but her mother insisted on sending her away to court. Something about how the experience would enrich her and teach her lessons about life. And now that day had come…and Claire wasn’t at all certain that she was entirely ready to be whisked away to Hampton Court and thrust into a life that was completely foreign to her. Servants were rushing past her in the hallway of their manor carrying her suitcases. Nearly everything she owned was being loaded onto the black carriage drawn by two white horses that was going to take her to King Henry and Queen Katherine’s palace…away from all that she knew. She didn’t realize it now…but in a few short days Claire Selwyn’s mundane and familiar existence was about to be shattered into a million pieces.
A/N: Okay let me know what you think of it so far…if it’s worthy to continue!
