Baby Come On
Chapter One: Hanging by a Moment
The end of the semester was always the best time for Cappie. But, the end of this particular semester was not going to be so great for him. For at the end of this semester someone else would become the president of Kappa Tau Gamma and he would be just a regular member once again.
“Yo Cappie,” Rusty said walking into his room. Cappie was lying on his bed staring at the ceiling.
“Spitter,” Cappie said.
“Come on Cappie,” Rusty said. “The party is starting. You know you want to go. Spend your last night as president doing what you love the most.”
“I’ll be down for the party in a few Spitter,” Cappie said. “Just let me think for a little bit longer.”
“Okay,” Rusty sighed and left the room.
Cappie let out a deep breath as he rested his head on his palms over his pillow. Tonight was his last night as Kappa Tau president. He did not want to celebrate this. He needed air, a fresh place to think. He sat up and headed for his window. Soon he was out of the house with none of the other members knowing.
Cappie began walking down the street, his hands shoved into his pockets. He made his way to the Zeta Beta Zeta to see Rebecca. But instead he continued walking, not wanting to be around anyone. As he walked the clouds began forming over his head, covering the sun, and making it a little dimmer.
“This is perfect,” he said sitting on a bench. “The weather and my mood are the same.”
“Why are you talking to yourself?” A familiar, yet unwanted voice came from behind.
Cappie looked up. “Evan,” he said. “Can I help you?”
“Nope,” Evan said in his usual antagonistic tone as he sat down. “What’s got you down?”
“Like you care,” Cappie said. “Just go away. I don’t have time for this right now.”
“Suit yourself,” Evan got up and began walking away.
Cappie let out a sigh.
Evan turned back around. “But you look like you need a friend. Though I might not be your first choice, maybe I can give you a fresh perspective on whatever your problem is.”
“Doubtful,” Cappie said. “There is no way around what is upsetting me. I just need to accept it.”
“I take it you’re upset your term as Kappa Tau President is ending?” Evan said sitting back down.
Cappie rolled his eyes.
“That would be a yes,” Evan smirked.
“Really Evan,” Cappie said. “You can go away now. I really don’t want to deal with you right now.”
“Look,” Evan held his hands up. “Truce? At least for now? I don’t want to see even you this upset. We used to be friends you know.”
“I know Evan,” Cappie said. “You ended that when we got here.”
“No I didn’t,” Evan said. “You did.”
“You took Casey from me,” Cappie said. “Why would you think that is okay?”
“She came to me,” Evan said. “I just offered to be her date to the dance. You were the one who stood her up.”
“Whatever,” Cappie said. “That’s not what I need to be thinking about right now.”
“I know,” Evan said.
The two sat their in silence for a few minutes.
“Remember camp?” Evan said, “And all those good times we had?”
“Yeah,” Cappie let out a sigh. “Back when things didn’t really matter and we were able to be friends without things getting between us.”
“Yeah,” Evan said. “Sometimes I wish we could go back to those days with the knowledge we have now. Maybe we could have avoided all this.”
“Too bad,” Cappie said. “Even if we went back to camp it wouldn’t matter. High school is what really tore us apart. Even if we still made it to college as friends.”
Evan nodded. “I guess you’re right,” he said. “Neither of us wanted to fess up to who we were. Who we are, even.”
“Do you…” Cappie started.
“Do I what?” Evan asked.
“Do you ever miss those nights?” Cappie asked.
“Almost every night,” Evan said.
“You were my first,” Cappie said. “My first… kiss… my first… you know.”
“Love?” Evan sighed, “You were mine too.”
“That’s what really doomed us,” Cappie said. “Two future frat guys can’t have a past like we do.”
“I remember that night,” Evan said. “It was raining. So we stayed in our cabin the whole night. The two of us who got lucky enough not to have to share with five other guys. Just you and I. It was cold and your blanket wasn’t warming you up enough. So—“
“So I asked if I could stay in your bed,” Cappie gave a faint smile. “You, the kid with much more money, had a much nicer and heavier blanket than mine. And you said I could.”
“You crawled into my bed,” Evan continued. “But you were still shivering. I asked you if you were going to be okay and you said yeah. But I wrapped my arms around you anyways. You were so cold I started shivering. But soon my body heat helped you warm up.”
“And I turned around to face you,” Cappie said. “And you smiled at me. You smiled at me with your safe, comforting smile.”
“My eyes fell into yours,” Evan said. “And the next thing I knew.”
“My lips were on your lips,” Cappie said. “And it lasted, for nearly ten seconds.”
Evan let out a heavy sigh. “Wow,” he said. “I can’t believe you remember all that too.”
“How could I not,” Cappie turned to Evan. “You don’t ever forget your first love. And at age sixteen, you were mine.”
“They say you never stop loving your first love,” Evan said. “Do you think that’s true?”
“You tell me,” Cappie said. “Was I your first love?”
“Cappie,” Evan gulped.
“Still too proud to admit it?” Cappie said, “Why are we wasting our time having this conversation?”
“What does it matter?” Evan asked, “It’s not like we can go back to those days anyways. What happened in the past should stay there.”
“You sure you really believe that?” Cappie said.
“What do you want me to say Capp?” Evan said.
Cappie’s eyes widened.
“What?” Evan frowned.
“Capp?” Cappie said, “That’s what you used to call me at camp.”
Evan looked down. “Sorry,” he said. “I didn’t mean to.”
Cappie looked down into his lap.
“Listen Cappie,” Evan said. “Maybe we should just let this go once and for all. And we could try to be friends. What do you say?”
“If it’s what you think will be best,” Cappie said. “I suppose being your friend again won’t be so bad.”
Cappie laughed.
“Shut up,” Evan said.
“Whatever,” Cappie laughed. “Well I guess I’d better get back to Kappa Tau. Don’t want Spitter to find out I left.”
“Okay,” Evan smirked.
They both stood up.
“So what?” Cappie smirked, “Do we hug? Kiss?”
Evan extended his hand.
“Here’s too,” he thought. “Friends.”
Cappie shrugged then shook Evan’s hand. Evan released his grip.
“I will see you around?” Evan asked, “What do you say we have lunch tomorrow?”
“Sure,” Cappie said.
Cappie turned and walked away from Evan and back to the Kappa Tau house. He climbed up and back into his room. He tossed his jacket onto his bed and headed for the basement.
“Cappie,” everyone yelled.
“Hey guys,” Cappie said with a fake smile. “Are you guys ready to party?”
The crowd, full of the brothers and many girls, cheered. Cappie walked over to the bar to get a beer.
“So Cappie,” Rusty said.
“Spitter,” Cappie raised an eyebrow and then took a sip of his beer.
“That was a long few minutes,” Rusty said. “What were you doing?”
“You really want to know Spitter?” Cappie asked.
“Yeah,” Spitter nodded with his wide grin.
“Masturbating,” Cappie smirked, took a drink of his beer, then walked away.
