The Incomprehensible Corruption of Innocence

By Rose O’ Sharon

It started out to be a nice day, all things considered. The Miami sun had come up bright and beautiful, it was payday, and the bank was open. They even had company going into the bank.

For some reason, Eric and H had decided to cash their paychecks at the same time, and Ryan needed to make a withdrawal. All of which would normally have taken 10 minutes tops.

But they didn’t count on the bank robbers entering shortly after them, blasting away at everything that moved, and forcing the five customers, the two tellers, and the manager to the floor.

And no one even thought that the three robbers would consist of two men who knew Ryan from his days as a patrolman, due to the fact he had arrested them both on drug charges, and gotten them thrown into prison for a long time.

And absolutely no one expected the robbers, once they’d gotten their cash, to grab hold of Ryan, and use him as a shield, or to hold their guns on the innocents, including H and Delko to ensure Ryan’s obedient cooperation in their get-a-way. However, not before the lead psycho had taken his tongue and drawn it in a long, slow lick up the side of Ryan’s neck, and bit his earlobe.

“We’re going to have some fun later,” the psycho grinned, and Ryan’s eyes widened as fear lit up their green depths, and he couldn’t stop the tremor that passed through his body and made his lower lip tremble, though it was obvious he tried desperately to control himself.

Without warning, the three robbers let loose with their weapons, and everyone dove for cover. A moment later, they, with Ryan in tow, burst out of the bank, shoved Ryan into the back of a waiting car, and literally blasted their way down the street. Bullets filled the air, and the driver of the car banged into several parked cars as they peeled away.

Heedless of the danger they were in, H and Delko burst out of the bank, just in time to see Ryan’s fighting form get bashed in the head with a weapon, and he collapsed out of view, obviously unconscious.

“H . . .” Eric’s voice was low, and he gazed helplessly at Horatio and swallowed. “H, they’re going to kill him.”

“Not,” Horatio put his gun away, opened his sunglasses and put them on his face. “If we get him back.”
