part 1..The Arrangement.
Vasey was heartily sick of Gisborne. A week after their return from the Holy Land and the man was still like the living dead.
' You can't say I didn't warn you' he said. His pacing and ruddy good health a stark contrast to Guy of Gisborne's stillness and Pallor.
'All that time you were mooning and slavering over her little Miss Knighton was playing kissy kissy with Hood. Just using you to help him, the Great Unwashed
and that damnable excuse for a King. Who I notice has remained in the Holy Land.
Quite content to let Prince John run the country obviously'...........
Guy said nothing. He'd barely said a word since his sword had killed Lady Marian in a fit of passion. He barely registered what Vasey was saying.
In a mind clouded by grief and darkened by guilt and remorse he saw Marian all but laughing at him. He heard her voice telling him she would rather die than be his wife. That she loved Robin and was to marry him. Words that drove like a dagger into his heart. The he saw again the slump of her body and the slow spread of blood as his sword pierced her belly ending her life.
A life she'd spent trying to help the poor. 'Marian..... '..He heard his own voice in his head. ' You were so full of love. Why could you not spare some for me'.
He thought he knew the answer to this. ' You're not worthy of being loved. That's why...............'.
Now. He could barely function. Even for his work for the Sheriff. The only path to the wealth and power he craved. Without which what was he ?................Nothing and now he truly had no one.
Sheriff Vasey, the closest thing he had in the world to either family or friend. Not a thought to make a man happy.
Vasey was talking again and his words this time were sufficient to cut through the fog.
'I'm going to help you Gisborne. You're an idiotic incompetent but at least you're loyal'.
He didn't add that he wasn't about to get rid of a man so simple to bend and manipulate though Guy knew it to be true. Vasey and Marian both had been manipulating him with pathetic ease.
' I'm going to help you by providing you with a wife. Harold of Clitheroe one of our |Black Knights has a daughter he's anxious to be rid of.'
He held a hand up as Guy looked panic stricken. 'No need to worry...apparently she's quite attractive. She's just been running Clitheroe's household since the age of 12 when her mother died. Now he's remarried and his new wife doesn't want a halfway pretty 21 year old around. Now don't you say I never give you anything.'
Guy collected himself together as well as he could. 'You're very generous My Lord.'
He managed. 'But I'm not ready to think about marriage to someone else yet'........
Vasey rolled his eyes. ' For crying out gently Gisborne. Don't be so wet. I'm not suggesting you get lovey dovey with the girl. In fact I advise against it.
But you need something to wipe Marian Knighton from your mind and another woman in your bed every night should do the trick. I'll contact Clitheroe and say the deals on then shall I ?'
Guy thought about this. Much as he didn't want another woman yet it would at least pour balm on the terrible ache of loneliness and despair filling every corner of his soul. So he replied.........'Yes My Lord'.
