PROLOGUE:
Jack looked at the phone in his hand, debating whether or not to push the button. If he didn't push the button, the best female agent that Torchwood had would die. If he did...HE would come running. He looked over at her broken body, both of them covered heavily in her blood. He knew she wouldn't last much longer. His TARDIS was broken...destroyed completely is more like it. She had sacrificed herself to keep Jack and their precious cargo alive. Jack closed his eyes and let out the deep breath he didn't know that he was holding in. He was going to do it, he was going to push the button. She told him only to do it if she was dying and he had no other options.
Chapter One:
An alarm rang loudly through the TARDIS, spooking Martha.
“Doctor!” She called on the little hand-held comm that he had given.
“Yes?”
“What does this alarm mean?” Then she held out the comm, letting him hear it better.
She heard him curse loudly in his own language, then let out a sad and shaky breath.
“She's dying...”
“Who, Doctor?”
The answer never came. When Martha looked up, the Doctor was running into the room.
“Doctor...”
He didn't answer her.
“Okay, Old Girl, it's time...” He said before he pushed a number of buttons and pulled a lever.
The TARDIS took off, letting the beacon lead her to the distress signal. Meanwhile, Jack sat the phone down, the red light still flashing and a steady beep coming from it. He cradled her in his arms, rocking back and forth, memories of the Doctor that she had planted in his head were racing through his mind.
(Seems like it was yesterday when I saw your face)
The very last time she saw the Doctor was a sad one for her. It was not very long until his transition to his ninth incarnation. She ran her hand through his hair for the last time, tugging on it gently before she let it go. 'So you don't forget me', she told him.
(You told me how proud you were but I walked away
She stepped away, but he put his hand on her arm.)
“Cadence...I'll never forget you...never...”
She smiled sadly.
“Yes, you will.”
She turned and walked away.
(If only I knew what I know today)
She knew even then that she was madly in love with the Doctor. She also knew that she couldn't stay with him, no matter how much she wanted to. But back then, she still had the hope that he would stop her, that he would grab her, throw her over his shoulder, and take her back to the TARDIS. But he didn't.
(I would hold you in my arms
I would take the pain away)
On her first adventure with the Doctor, they had been captured. The Doctor was tortured and thrown into a cell with her. When she was sure that they had gone, she crawled in the darkness to his side. She held him as he rode out the pain of the torture.
“Cadence...” He croaked.
“Ssssh,” She said as she rocked back and forth.
She wished that it had been her, instead of him, if only to spare him the pain.
(Thank you for all you've done
Forgive all your mistakes)
But after the Doctor had left, for what she was sure was for good, She had curled up on her bed with a picture that TARDIS had taken for her and cried for hours. She had fallen asleep at some point and when she woke, she would cry again, hoping that he would come back and make the hurt go away.
(There's nothing I wouldn't do)
The only reason she even joined Torchwood was for him, to find him again. She had her chance once, but only found out when it was much, much too late.
“Jack...”
“He was here, Cade.”
“What?”
“The Doctor...he was here....”
Cade looked hopeful.
“That's why you were sent away. The Director thought...that if you had found him again...then you wouldn't be...as effective in your job...”
(To hear your voice again)
Jack held her as she cried, only now seeing it. That his friend and colleague was madly, desperately, and deeply in love with the Time Lord. He remembered hearing something on her phone once, he didn't understand what it was until that moment. He reached into her pocket and plucked out her phone and pulled up a recording, pushing play. A man's voice ranting about god only knew what filled their ears and she seemed to calm. It was the Doctor. He just didn't get it until then.
(Sometimes I want to call you but I know you won't be there)
She had wanted to push the button so many times before, if only to see him one more time, to say goodbye properly. Wanting to cry her pain out in his arms. But she knew that he wouldn't be there, that he wouldn't come.
(I'm sorry for blaming you for everything I just couldn't do)
There were times when the mere mention of the Time Lord's name made her angry, for leaving her, for her failures. Nobody understood why, but after Jack had met him...he began to.
(And I've hurt myself by hurting you)
She remembered the look of pain, hurt, and confusion on the Time Lord's face before she walked away from him. He looked like someone had just killed his favorite puppy a million times over in front of him without telling him why.
(Some days I feel broke inside but I won't admit)
She would walk around like a ghost, like a zombie in the Doctor's aftermath. Always sent away from where he would be.
(Sometimes I just want to hide 'cause it's you I miss)
And when she reached the safety of her apartment, she would lock herself in her closet with a coat that she had stolen from the Doctor. A coat that still had his scent on it, no matter what happened to it or where it had been. She would cry herself to sleep after so many hours because she missed him so badly. And when no-one could find her, Jack always seemed to know where she was. Locked in her closet. Curled up in a ball. Wearing an old Victorian velvet coat. Asleep. With tear tracks on her already pale face.
(You know it's so hard to say goodbye when it comes to this)
And when it came time for her to say goodbye to the Doctor, she knew that she couldn't.
(Would you tell me I was wrong?
Would you help me understand?
Are you looking down upon me?
Are you proud of who I am?
There's nothing I wouldn't do
To have just one more chance
To look into your eyes and see you looking back
I'm sorry for blaming you for everything I just couldn't do
And I've hurt myself
If I had just one more day, I would tell you how much that
I've missed you since you've been away
Oh, it's dangerous
It's so out of line to try to turn back time
I'm sorry for blaming you for everything I just couldn't do
And I've hurt myself
By hurting you)
Jack heard a familiar sound. The welcoming sound of a TARDIS.
“He's coming, Cade,” He whispered to her, hoping she heard him, “hang on, Cade, he's coming.”
When the TARDIS appeared, Jack let out a happy and sad sob. The door opened tentatively and a head poked out.
“Oh dear god!” The Doctor said when he saw a bloody Jack holding and even bloodier Cadence.
He stumbled out of the door, finally catching himself. When he reached them, he dropped to his knees.
“Cadence.....”
Jack bit back a sob.
“Doc....she was hurt...on a mission...”
The Doctor looked up at Jack.
“I noticed she was hurt...but she said it was just a scratch...that it was nothing...at one point..she collapsed...she was still holding her shoulder...I pulled her hand away from it...it was completely covered......”
Martha stuck her head out the door.
“In blood....that was miles back...”
The Doctor stroked blood matted hair. (Cade's, not Jack's).
“Doctor?” Martha called tentatively, stepping from the TARDIS.
The Doctor and Jack looked up at Martha and she saw, finally, what was between the two of them. A girl, beaten, bruised, broken, and incredibly bloody. She might as well have been dead.
