If I Had Only Known
Chapter 1

"Now what?" David Sorenson asked himself. The ominous sound of clicking, as he turned the key in the ignition of his Ford truck, making him nervous. Climbing from the truck, he looked all around the countryside, "Great, not a house in sight and with my luck there won't be any traffic...spoke too soon." His grumbling stopped, replaced by a smile when he saw an orange car headed his way.

"Hey there, need some help?" Bo asked, pulling himself from the General.

"Yeah," David managed to answer, forcing himself not to stare at the beautiful man in front of him. "I was just headed up to my new property and stopped to admire the scenery. Now the stupid thing won't start and I don't know much about engines," he explained, running a hand through his thick brown curls.

"I'd be happy to take a look at it," Bo offered, stepping towards the truck. "Name's Bo Duke," he introduced himself, holding out his right hand, glancing up at the man who stood a good three inches above him.

"David Sorenson," came the reply, accompanied by a firm handshake.

"What's it doing?"

"Huh? Oh yeah, nothing at all, just clicks when I try to start it." It took David a second to realize that Bo hadn't recognized his name.

"You mind?" Bo asked, opening the door and sliding into the seat.

"No, go ahead and give it a try."

"It done this before?"

"No, this is the first time it's happened."

"Okay," Bo acknowledged. Reaching down, he popped the hood latch and climbed out of the truck. Going back to the General, he opened the trunk and removed a small wrench from it, before going back to the Ford. Propping the hood up, he quickly found what he was looking for, "Get in and turn the key when I tell ya."

"Sure," David said, moving to do as instructed.

Leaning over the fender, Bo gave a couple of quick taps. "Try it now," he called, smiling when the engine roared to life.

"How'd you do that?" David asked.

"Come here and I'll show ya."

Getting out of the truck, David walked to the front of the vehicle and turned questioning blue eyes to Bo.

"See this thing right here?" Bo asked, pointing with his wrench.

"Yeah."

"It's called a solenoid switch, that's what's giving you the trouble, it's going out. All I did was give it a couple of taps, that'll work for a little while but ya need to get it replaced."

"Could you do it?" David asked, seeing a chance to get to know the blond a little.

"Sure I could, you just get the part and I'll do it for ya," Bo agreed, always willing to help.

"I don't suppose you know where I could get one?"

"Cooter's garage, if he ain't got one he can order it pretty quick."

"You know the number?"

"Just a minute," Bo replied, moving back to the General and leaning in the window. Grabbing the cb mic, he called his friend.

"Breaker one, breaker one, might be crazy but I ain't dumb, Crazy Cooter coming at ya. What ya need Lost Sheep 2?"

*Lost Sheep 2? Crazy Cooter?* David thought to himself as he listened to the conversation.

"Hey Cooter, I got a customer for ya. He's driving him a Ford F-150 that's got a bad solenoid switch, you got any in stock?"

"That's a negatory Bo, used my last one this morning, I can order one from Capitol City though and have it tomorrow."

"That'll be fine," David replied to Bo's questioning look.

"That'll work Cooter, thanks, catch ya later, I'm gone," Bo replied. Leaning into the car, he replaced the mic before turning back to David. "If you'll tell me where you're living, I'll bring it out as soon as Cooter has it in."

"Actually it's not far, why don't you just follow me," David suggested, not wanting this chance meeting to end.

"I know the area pretty well so if you'll tell me, I imagine I can find it," Bo countered. He didn't want to be rude, but he knew Uncle Jesse was waiting for him to get back with the parts for the tractor.

"Oh," David said, trying to hide his disappointment. "Let me just get the address, I think the real estate agent referred to it as the Peterson place."

"The Peterson place? Well heck that's right next to our place, I know right where it is," Bo grinned brightly. "You gonna be home all day tomorrow?"

"Should be," David replied. "Our place?"

"Huh? Oh yeah, the Duke farm, it's been in the family for five generations. I live there with my Uncle Jesse and my two cousins, Luke and Daisy."

"That's nice," David said, his eyes shining joyfully at the thought. He'd been sure when Bo said our place that he was married and out of reach. *Don't get excited David, he may not be interested,* he reminded himself. "Well what do I owe ya for the help?"

"Don't owe me nothing, just being neighborly," Bo replied, waving away the offer.

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah I'm sure," Bo answered. "Tell ya what, if you really want to pay me, you get me a six pack of beer for tomorrow, that'll be plenty."

"What kind?"

"Whatever ya get's fine, I'm not picky. It was real nice meeting ya David, but I really got to go," Bo said as the cb squawked to life.

"Shepherd to Lost Sheep 2, you got your ears on?"

"This is Lost Sheep 2, sorry Uncle Jesse, I'll be home in a few minutes."

"With an explanation?"

"Yes sir," Bo replied. "See ya tomorrow David," he waved to his new friend before putting the car in gear and driving off.

"There ya are," Jesse gruffly greeted him as he climbed from the General.

"What's her name Bo?" Luke teased.

"Huh?" Bo asked. Taking the parts from the trunk he handed them to Jesse. Following his uncle to the tractor, he began to help with the repairs.

"The girl that ya was talking to," Luke explained, coming up to help as well.

"Wasn't talking to a girl Luke," Bo denied.

"Dang it Bo, we can't afford no ticket right now," Luke snapped.

"Luke what are you talking about?" Bo asked, wondering why he was being yelled at.

"You're late and if ya wasn't talking to a girl, ya must've had a run-in with Rosco."

"Well I didn't, just so happens I was helping out our new neighbor," Bo snapped, irriatated by his cousin's assumptions.

"New neighbor?" Jesse asked, looking over his shoulder at Bo.

"Yes sir, his name's David Sorenson, he just moved into the old Peterson place."

"Ya said ya was helping him?"

"I saw him parked on the side of the road, his truck wouldn't start. Turns out it's the solenoid switch, I got it running and Cooter's gonna get him a new one. If it's okay, I'll take it over there tomorrow and replace it for him."

"As long as your chores are done, that'll be fine," Jesse agreed with a smile. "I take it he ain't much of a mechanic?"

"No sir, guess not."

"Well right now I need your help, hold this wrench while I loosen the bolt," Jesse instructed.

"Yes sir," Bo replied, grabbing the wrench and keeping pressure on the nut as his uncle loosened the bolt.

David sat on his front porch, looking up at the night sky, drinking in the beauty of the countryside. It was so good to get out of the city, this was just what he'd needed. "Damn," he muttered as the phone began to ring. Reluctantly he got up and went inside, pretty sure who would be on the other end. "Hello."

"David, I'm so glad you're there, you must come back to New York," his manager breathlessly insisted.

"No Phillip, I mustn't. What I need is right here," David insisted.

"But David you don't understand. Mrs. Rothman called, she wants to commission a painting and she's willing to pay very well."

"Phillip you're not listening, now I'll explain it very slowly so pay attention. I have more money now than I could ever hope to spend. I don't need to work and right now I couldn't if I had to. I need a break Phillip, need to get back in touch with my roots which is why I came back to Georgia. Now I want you to accept this and go take care of some of your other clients, I'm sure they'll appreciate the attention. Good-bye Phillip," David said, ending the call and replacing the receiver back on the base. Turning the ringer on the phone off, he again moved outside to admire the night sky. His thoughts weren't on the sky though, or on the call from his manager, there was only one thing on his mind. A tall, blue-eyed blond who had already stolen his heart.
