Distribution: If you’ve had my permission before, you have it now. Anyone else, ask first please.
Disclaimer: I do not claim to own the characters in the fic, nor do I make money from borrowing them.
Authors notes: I had to guess Chris Keller’s age, which was kinda difficult due to him being two years younger than Chad in real life. I’m pretty sure he’s supposed to bed older in the show though, so if I’m wrong, sue me.
Dedication: To Lawrence, as usual, for being my beta.
“I have something I need to tell you.” Lucas admits, several weeks after his initial hook up with Chris Keller, the dreaded wife stealer and all round asshole who’d helped in almost destroying Nathan and Haley’s marriage. Lucas knows he owes Nathan the truth.
“Why so serious, Luke?” Nathan teases, sitting down beside his brother on the wall outside school. “Don’t tell me…you’re quitting the team to become a cheerleader? No, wait…you’re having a sordid affair with…”
“Nathan, this is hard enough as it is without you making fun.” Lucas interrupts sternly. “There’s this guy who I…”
“Lucas, are you trying to tell me you’re gay?” Nathan asks, laughing at his brother’s awkwardness.
“Nate, just listen, please!” Lucas begs, finding this hard enough without being second-guessed. “That’s not what I’m trying to tell you. I slept with Chris Keller.”
Nathan’s smile drops instantly, a mixed look of anger and betrayal replacing it just as quickly. “You better be joking.”
“I’m not.” Lucas says, sheepishly. “I know I shouldn’t have done it with all the history between you and Haley, but I was drunk…”
“Lucas, I don’t care if you think you’re gay or whatever. I don’t even care if you want to fuck a low life like him.” Nathan mutters, barely able to look his brother in the eye anymore. “Its him I have the problem with. He can’t keep his hands to himself. First Haley, then you?”
“Nathan…” Lucas starts.
“No, you’ve said enough. How about next time you don’t tell me? There are some things I just don’t want to know.” Nathan walks away, muttering under his breath.
Lucas feels terrible. He knows it could have been worse, that Nathan could have blamed him and they would have fallen out all over again. He takes out his cell and calls Chris, not surprised when it reaches answer phone. “Hey, its me. Nathan knows. I told him. And he’s pissed, so you better stay out of his way until it blows over… Are we still on for tonight? Call me back.”
*~*~*~*
“How do you people function without brains? I said from the top!” Chris yells at the men on the other side of the screen in the recording studio. “Jesus fucking Christ.”
The door slams open and Nathan storms in, fixed look in his eye.
“Oh, its you.” Chris strums his guitar to prove just how unfazed he is by Nathan’s evil glare. “You here to give me more money?”
Nathan throws a look at the studio booth and looks back at Chris. “We need to talk somewhere private.”
“I’m getting the weirdest sense of deja-vu…” Chris smirks. “No wait, wrong brother.”
“Now!” Nathan grabs Chris and hauls him out of there, barely giving Chris enough time to set his baby down safely. “Hey, watch it!” He complains as he catches the doorframe on the way out. “And I thought you only got rough during sex.”
Nathan stops and shoves Chris away from him. “Shut up, alright? This isn’t a game.”
“I know, you’re mad because I had sex with Lucas.” Chris shrugs. “It’s not like we’re exclusive. Do I complain about you sleeping with Haley?”
“We’re not back together yet. You think I’d be fucking you if we were?” Nathan points out, angrily.
“So…are we exclusive?” Chris cocks his head sarcastically. “Are you my boyfriend?”
Nathan has to restrain himself; he just can’t help but get riled by this asshole. “Stay away from Lucas.”
“Why? Is Lucas yours too?” Chris asks, playfully. “Or do you just not like sharing me?”
“Get this straight…you’re a convenient fuck while Haley and I aren’t together. If I want you to stay away from Lucas, its because he can do so much better than you.” Nathan explains.
Chris’ smirk no longer looks amused. “Well, Lucas can just find that out for himself, can’t he?”
“Not once I tell him…” Nathan breaks off. He knows before Chris even opens his mouth that his threat is empty.
“Telling Lucas is as good as telling Haley.” Chris points out, smugly. “And you don’t want that, do you?” Nathan just glares. “I thought not. So why don’t you just stay out of my sex life?”
“I won’t let you hurt him.” Nathan growls.
“Who says I will?” Chris retorts.
Nathan knows he’s backed himself into a corner. He can’t tell Lucas the truth because it will risk Haley.
“Listen, Nathan.” Chris begins, hint of a patronising tone in his voice. “I know you’re just worried about your brother. And probably worried our little fling will get out and you’ll lose Haley all over again. But if you keep your mouth shut and I keep my mouth shut…” Chris pauses to make his point. “You see where I’m going with this?”
”You better be careful.” Nathan warns, angrily. “Lucas isn’t into screwing around with degenerates like you. He wants relationships and fidelity. So why don’t you just stop this now before you end up hurting him?”
Chris shakes his head in bemusement. “Please! Lucas is a big boy. And if I’m such a degenerate, why do you keep coming back for more?”
Nathan wishes he knew. “Are you going to tell him about us?”
“You want me to lie to him?” Chris smirks. “Wouldn’t that be considered hurting him? I’m no expert, but…don’t these relationship types like a little honesty?”
Nathan glares in reply.
“I’m just messing with you.” Chris laughs at the younger boys expression. “I won’t say a word. Your secret is safe. But in return, you have to show some support. Your opinion matters to him.”
“You want me to tell him to keep seeing you?” Nathan snorts. “Lucas isn’t going to stop doing anything because I don’t agree with it.”
“We’ll see.” Chris shrugs. “Now, is that all? Because studio time costs money, and I’d hate to start charging you more to spend time with your wife.”
Nathan walks off, refusing to continue sparring any longer. He still isn’t confident Chris will keep his mouth shut, but then Chris obviously has as interest in Lucas, so there is always the possibility Chris wants this to stay secret just as much as he does.
Chris waits until Nathan is gone before pulling his phone out and calling Lucas. “Hey baby, Chris Keller’s got a surprise for you. Yeah, tonight. I’ll see you then.” He snaps the phone shut and returns it to his pocket, big smile on his face.
*~*~*~*
Lucas is on his way over to Chris’ when he bumps into Nathan. He can’t help but look guilty, but fortunately for him, Nathan is too busy hiding his own guilt to notice. “Nathan…hey…”
“Hey…” Nathan shifts awkwardly on his feet. “Can we go somewhere and talk?”
“Uh…yeah.” Lucas casts a quick look at his watch. “I have a few minutes. We can go over to the café?”
Nathan nods and leads the way, Lucas reluctantly following. Once they’ve said hello to Karen, they sit at the table in the corner, out of the way so no one can hear their conversation.
“I’m sorry about before.” Nathan starts. “I didn’t mean to go off at you.”
Lucas nods slowly. “If you want me to stop seeing him, I will.”
Nathan is completely thrown by Lucas’ offer. He can’t believe Chris was right about this. How could Chris Keller possibly know Lucas better than him? “You’d do that? If I asked you to?”
“Nathan, I hate fighting with you. And after everything that went on before, I shouldn’t even have started this thing with him. So, yeah…if you want me to, I’ll stop.” Lucas admits.
Nathan is touched by Lucas’ concern for his welfare. He only wishes his answer could reflect the same. But he knows if he wants his secret kept, he needs to give this bizarre relationship his support. “I, uh…don’t want you to stop on my account.” He begins, not sure how to word this. “I just want you to be careful. He might just suddenly leave on tour without saying goodbye, or start sleeping around, if he isn’t already…”
“Nathan.” Lucas interrupts. “I’m not stupid. I know what he’s like. And we’re not together like that. It’s just…”
“Sex?” Nathan finishes for him as Lucas struggles to say it.
Mildly embarrassed about talking about this with his brother, Lucas nods. “I’m not going to get my heart broken.”
Nathan smiles, relieved that Lucas isn’t falling for Chris with unrealistic expectations. Now that he doesn’t have to worry about his brother getting hurt, he just has to concentrate on ensuring Chris keeps his mouth shut.
“I really have to get going.” Lucas says, standing up. “To see Chris, actually.” He feels oddly happy in being able to say that to Nathan. No more lies.
“Forgive me if I don’t tell you to have a good time.” Nathan smirks.
Lucas laughs. “Don’t worry, I plan to.”
“No, no, too much information!” Nathan covers his ears, grinning as Lucas punches his arm. “Can I ask you a question before you go?”
“That depends…” Lucas answers, half expecting Nathan to torment him further.
“Does Haley know? Or your mom? Anybody?” He asks.
Lucas throws a look over to the counter, where his mom is chatting away to one of the customers happily. “Not exactly. But I think Haley knows I’m gay. Possibly my mom and Keith too.”
“You gonna tell them?”
Lucas sighs. “Not about Chris. Not yet. But…who knows, maybe I’ll tell them what they think they already know.”
“Well, I’m here for ya, bro.” Nathan offers. “I wouldn’t worry too much about it. The only person I can think of who’ll have a problem with this is…”
“Dan.” Lucas finishes for him. “Yeah, I know. Been thinking about since I finally admitted it to myself. He’s one of the reasons I haven’t told anybody else yet.”
“Except me.” Nathan points out. “How come?”
Lucas half-smiles at him. “You deserved to know. Because it was Chris. And I didn’t want to hurt you by having you find out from someone else. I guess Haley deserves that much too. I’ll tell her tomorrow.”
“Yeah, good luck with that.” Nathan laughs.
Lucas throws him a sarcastic look. “Thanks.” His phone starts ringing loudly in his pocket, interrupting them.
“Uh oh, you’re late!” Nathan teases.
Lucas checks the name on the phone before ignoring it. “I better go. See ya later!”
Nathan watches his brother leave in a hurry and smiles to himself, wondering if maybe he was wrong about this whole situation. He isn’t sure he trusts Chris, but he knows Lucas is smart enough to take care of himself. He pulls out his own cell phone and calls Haley, hoping that in finding the ability to trust Lucas’ new ‘relationship’, he could inspire himself to give his own another try.
*~*~*~*
Chris answers the door with a huge grin on his face, pulling Lucas inside and practically dragging him into the bedroom. “Nobody keeps Chris Keller waiting. But don’t worry, I forgive you. “
Lucas laughs nervously as he’s sat down on the bed by an overactive and far too excited musician. “What’s got into you?”
“I have a question.” Chris starts, sitting down beside Lucas.
“This doesn’t sound good.” Lucas comments, anxiously.
“How would you feel about a threesome?” Chris asks him.
Lucas’ eyes widen. He really hadn’t expected that. “A what?!”
“You know, three in a bed…more sex, more fun…?” Chris explains.
“I know what it is.” Lucas replies.
“With a girl?” Chris continues.
“No.” Lucas answers immediately.
“A guy?”
“No!”
“How about your brother?” Chris smirks.
Lucas shoves Chris, hard, knocking the older boy off the bed and onto the floor. Lucas frowns, realising something. “You’re messing with me, aren’t you?”
“Maybe.” Chris sits back on the bed, rubbing the elbow he landed on. “I actually wanted to ask you about us.”
“Us?” This makes Lucas far more worried. “Go on…”
“So, Nathan threatened me today. He warned me not to hurt you. Looks like he didn’t have to worry about that…” Chris looks at his ‘injured’ elbow deliberately, checking for bruising. “He also told me you were…well, the clingy type.”
“He said what?” Lucas fumes.
“Okay, he said it in a nicer way, but that’s the gist of it. You like the lovey dovey stuff and the holding hands and the remembering anniversaries and all the stuff I suck at.” Chris explains.
Lucas begins to laugh. “You think I want to hold your hand?”
“That’s what I’m asking. You know I’m not that guy, right?” Chris asks him. “I sleep around, I do what I like.”
Lucas is fine with it. Of course he’s fine. It’s only sex after all. But when he goes to say all this, the worst words ever come out. “If that’s what you want.”
“It’s not what you want?” Chris realises how bad an idea all this is. Nathan was right after all.
“You can do whatever you want.” Lucas adds, still not getting his meaning across effectively. “I’m not into that, but we’re not dating, so…”
Chris hates that he’s ruined the whole night with this. He wants to fix it. Lucas is much more fun when he’s happy. “What if I stop seeing other people?” He can’t even believe he’s just suggested it. It came out of nowhere and now he can’t take it back.
Lucas laughs, half-heartedly. “You don’t have to do that for me. Its just sex between us, right? No hand holding necessary.”
Chris isn’t so sure, but he’s been let off the hook, so he eagerly nods. “Can we have sex now?”
“Do you have to ask?” Lucas grins, kicking his shoes off.
*~*~*~*
“I knew it!” Haley squeals, clapping her hands together excitedly. “Okay, I didn’t know, but…can I be happy for you?”
Lucas laughs and lets her hug him, glad this is going so well. Because the next part might not be as easy. “Hales…I’ve been seeing a guy.”
“Ooooh, is it Tim?” Haley asks.
Lucas can’t help but laugh at her question. “Tim? No, it’s not Tim. He’s totally in love with Nathan, everyone knows that. The guy I’m seeing is…well, it’s difficult.”
”Do I know him?” Haley asks, running through the guys she knows, trying to cross reference the ‘potentially gay’ ones with the ‘Lucas’ type’ ones and coming up with… “Mouth?”
“Haley!” Lucas groans. “It’s Chris Keller.”
Haley bursts into laughter, having to cover her mouth to stop. “Oh my God, are you serious?”
Lucas isn’t amused, but at least she’s not screaming at him.
“You are!” She isn’t laughing anymore, but she is smiling. A good sign. “Does Nathan know? He’s going to kill you! Or Chris…probably both of you…”
”Nathan knows and he’s happy for us. Or, at least, nobody died, so I think he is.” Lucas admits. “Are you sure you’re okay with this?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?” Haley asks. “Chris is a great guy. And so are you!”
“Thanks, Hales.” Lucas hugs her again, loving how well this was all going. If only everyone would be that easy. “Now I have to tell my mom, Keith, Peyton and…”
”Brooke?” Haley looks sorry for him. “That’s not going to be fun.”
“She’ll be okay, I think.” Lucas doesn’t sound convinced. “Probably offended, knowing Brooke.”
“Well, even if she does freak out, she’ll come around.” Haley assures him. “So have you and he…you know…?”
Lucas laughs and shakes his head in disbelief. “I can’t believe you just asked me that.”
”What?” Haley grins. “I’m curious!”
“Haley James Scott,” Lucas announces, amusedly, “you’re a total faghag.”
*~*~*~*
Chris grabs hold of the seven bottles of beer and carefully carries them over to the table filled with his music buddies. He sits back down and starts drinking his own beer, trying to catch up on the conversation.
“Man, you see that over there, checking you out?” The guy next to Chris tells him, pointing over at the girl at the bar. “She wants you man, go get her!”
Chris casually glances at the stunning blonde who’s giving him all the signs and looks back at his friends. “I can do better.”
A collective ‘yeah right’ is thrown back in his face. His friends are used to the cocky attitude, but none of them realise that isn’t the reason for tonight’s behaviour.
“Dude, she’s outta your league, how are you going to do better?” His friend teases.
“Maybe I already have.” Chris smirks at them.
“Oh, this high school kid you’re fucking, right?” Another friend asks, laughing. “He’s cute. His dad’s also running for mayor, so you better watch out!”
Chris doesn’t correct them. It’s better if they think its Nathan; it leaves Lucas out of it. And Chris is quite happy to do that, though he’s not sure he knows why.
“Okay, if you’re after a guy, check this one out!” One of the guys points out a young male, also blond and attractive but not in an obvious way. It catches Chris’ attention immediately.
“I’m going in.” Chris smirks as his friends cheer him on. He swigs his beer and heads over to say hello.
*~*~*~*
“This is my first time.” Josh admits as Chris fumbles with the key to his apartment. “Not that I’m not ready, its just…so you know.”
Chris opens the door and when Josh joins him, he’s quick to pull him into a kiss. It doesn’t feel like it used to, but Chris assumes that’s because he’s not used to virgins. Other than Lucas of course. But when he feels a hand on his crotch, rubbing against him desperately, Chris feels really wrong. He pulls back and prevents Josh from following. “Uh…maybe this was a bad idea.”
“Did I do something wrong?” The younger man asks, awkwardly.
“No, I’m just…” Chris rolls his eyes, can’t believe he’s about to say this. “I’m into somebody else and this isn’t right.”
The young blond leaves without much of a fight and Chris immediately feels better. But not good enough. Despite the fact it’s late, he calls Lucas’ cell phone, needing to hear that voice.
“You woke me up.” Lucas’ voice informs in, irritably.
“Just calling to say…” Chris could kick himself for being such a girl. “…that I’m horny.”
“And drunk by the sound of it.” Lucas adds, his tone softening.
“I changed my mind about seeing other people. It’s so old, you know? Chris Keller is a one-man man from now on.” Chris tells him, trying to make it sound cooler than it actually is.
Lucas doesn’t speak for a few seconds. “Can we have this conversation when you’re sober and I’m awake?”
“Tomorrow morning.” Chris says, eager to see Lucas again so he can get this off his chest.
“I’m at school.” Lucas reminds him. “After? I’ll come round.”
“Yeah, you’ll be coming alright.” Chris teases. “But what I am supposed to do now? Horny as hell and no one to make it better…”
“You’ll live.” Lucas disconnects the phone and goes back to sleep with a smile on his face.
Chris, meanwhile, staggers into his bedroom and falls on the bed, jerking himself off before falling asleep.
