Charlie didn’t dare going into the room. He heard voices from the inside, it’s Terry’s and Dad’s, he couldn’t exactly hear what they were talking about but it had to be something funny because suddenly he could hear Don laughing. Then the door opened and he looked into the face of his father.

“Go to him, Charlie. He wonders why don’t want to see him.”

His father patted him on the shoulder and left the hospital with Terry.

When Charlie stepped inside the little room the first thing he saw were lots of machines and instruments linked to Don’s body. He had never seen his brother like this before. He looked pale and exhausted, maybe from the operation.

“Come here, Charlie, take a seat. I have to talk to you.”, Don said and pointed to a chair next to the bed. Charlie did as he was told for he couldn’t say no to his older brother.

“Why didn’t you visit me earlier?”, was the first question that filled the air.

Charlie stayed silent. He didn’t know what to answer.

“Charlie? Hey! You heard me?”

Don snapped his fingers in front of Charlie’s face making the young man jump a bit, awakening from his trance. He opened his mouth to speak, but the moment he looked at Don the words he had wanted to say vanish, disappear and never return. He couldn’t say it. He wasn’t supposed to tell his brother that his heart broke the day he had heard about Don being shot. That a pain inside him had been growing ever since. That he couldn’t bare the fact that Don was out there risking his life every single day. That it had been driving him mad.

Finally Charlie stood up.

“I can’t do this. I am not good at such things.”

He turned his back on Don and was about to walk out of the door. Don’s hand seized his arm. Charlie’s skin started burning, he could feel Don’s tight grip, he would not let him leave.

“Don’t go.”

This was when it all began.
