“But I have to see him!” The young girl wailed. ‘It’s important!” she’d been arguing with Freddie for 20 minutes but he would not let her pass.

“Look Miss, I’ve really sorry but I can’t just let you wander in here off the street, these are restricted premises. If you want to leave your details I’ll get Bodie to get in touch with you.” She shook her head stubbornly.

“No!” She actually stomped her foot. “I’ve come all this way from Liverpool to see him and I’m not going till I do.” Freddie had just about had it to the back teeth with this impertinent little Miss. They were still arguing when Freddie heard voices. True he’d told her that Bodie was not there and at the time it had been true. However he could hear him coming up from the car park, obviously arguing with Doyle as was typical of those two.

“You’re just sore Doyle cause I got the night off and you got stuck on surveillance. Sorry chum.” He laughed at something Doyle said and bounded up the stairs in a very good mood and waited at the top for Doyle to drag himself up the stairs.

“Are you William Bodie?” A female voice behind him asked and Bodie tensed. He’d not been addressed by his Christian name in too long to remember. Doyle sniggered at the look on his face. Slowly he turned to face a young girl and Freddie.

“Yes, that’s right, who wants to know?” He’d not moved from the stairs.

“William Andrew Phillip Bodie?” She again questioned and Bodie winced at the full title.

“Yes and who are you?” He slowly walked over and stood in front of her. Bodie didn’t think she was going to answer him as she stood there studying him for a good few minutes. Bodie finally gave her a quizzical look as if to say well.

“I’m your daughter.” She replied and Bodie felt his face drain of all colour.

“My what!” Bodie exploded. His good mood evaporating in an instant.
“You been keepin’ secrets Bodie?” Doyle chuckled at his side. Bodie glared at him and Doyle grinned back unrepentantly.

“Your daughter.” She repeated. “Sorry.” She just shrugged her shoulders as if that explained everything. Bodie studied the young girl standing in front of him. She was very pretty with long dark hair and vivid blue eyes. She was quite tall, coming up to Bodie’s shoulder.

“What’s you name?” He demanded, still not believing her.

“Katie Scarlet O’Hara” she replied and Bodie chuckled. “Mum always used to say my name was preordained with a surname like O’Hara and seeing I was apparently conceived in the middle of Gone with the Wind.” Bodie actually felt his face flush at that piece of news. It had taken him a further 10 years to actually see the end of that movie.

“How is Annie?” he asked fondly remembering a fair hair blue eyed girl. She’d been his first “older woman” a whole two years older then him at the time and at 14 two years is a lot.

“She’s dead.” Katie said with no emotion. “She died 8 months ago. Cancer.”

“Oh jeez luv, sorry.” Ray spoke up and she looked over at him.

“Hi,” she gave him a dazzling smile. “It’s OK. We weren’t particularly close.”

“Ray Doyle, my partner.” Bodie introduced him.

“Hi, Katie O’Hara.” She shook his hand and smiled. She was a pretty girl and even more so when she smiled. ‘Hell the parentage is so obvious’ Doyle thought. It was like looking at a female version of Bodie. Same dark silky hair and blue eyes although hers were a lighter blue than his.

“Come on, we can’t talk standing around in the foyer.” He picked up her bag and led her up to, what Cowley joking called, their office. Doyle followed with her other bag.

“How long you been in London luv.” Bodie asked as he opened the door and Katie walked in to their office and Doyle turned the kettle on.

“Oh about two hours. You’re a hard man to find William, you know that.” She sat down.

“Do me a favour luv, drop the William will you. It’s just Bodie.” Katie looked a bit surprised at that but she nodded.

“He hates his Christian names. Never uses em” Doyle supplied helpfully and Katie laughed.

“You try going through life as Katie Scarlet and see the snickers and giggles you get. At least William is a normal name. My mother was an incurable romantic and it shows in our names.” She smiled up at Bodie when he handed her a cuppa.

“You’ve got brothers and sisters?” He asked and she nodded.

“Yes, four brothers and three sisters.” Doyle choked on his tea.

“Bloody hell. Eight kids!” Katie nodded.

‘Yep, all younger than me. I was her first ‘mistake’ as she used to say.” Bodie winced at that comment. It did not sound like the Annie he remembered. A free spirited fun loving girl who would try anything for a dare. Obviously she’d got more then she bargained for.

“Where are your brothers and sisters now?” Bodie asked hoping that all eight of em were not going to land on his doorstep.

“With their father, where else would they be?” Katie asked puzzled.

“Just wonderin’. You said their father, all the same one?” Bodie asked

“Yes, I was about 4 or 5 when she hooked up with David. He was OK but made it quite clear when mum died I was not his responsibility and to get out, so I did.”

“So you didn’t take his surname when they married?” Doyle asked sipping his tea.

“Oh, they never actually got married just shacked up together for 13 years.”

“That’s not bad going, 7 kids in 13 years.” Bodie was horrified at the thought.

“Mum used to say I was letting the side down but I don’t want kids at my age. I want to do things and I figured London was as good a place to start as any. I’m going to get a job and a flat and do things with my life and not get tied down with 3 kids before I’m 21” Katie was determined.

“How old are you now?” Bodie asked feeling a bit embarrassed having too.

“Seventeen. I’ll be 18 on November 11.” Both men did some quick calculating.

“Jeez Bodie, you did start young!” Doyle said in awe.

“Yer well most 14 year olds don’t think too much about safe sex.” He grumbled.

“Jeez at 14 it was all I thought about.” Doyle replied and Bodie hit him.

“I said safe sex you idiot. It never occurred to me at that age that I’d need it.”

“You aren’t totally to blame Bodie; Mum was in on it too.”

“Yer sunshine, but I got away with it, she didn’t. Sixteen is too young to be having a baby. I wish she’d told me.” He was floored by this unexpected development.

“You’d already left to join the Merchant Navy and besides you would have ended up hating us both if you’d been forced to stay.” Katie explained logically.

“Probably.” Bodie said realising what she said was true.

They’d been chatting for a while and Bodie was slowly warming to this father idea. My daughter he kept thinking and a stupid grin would spread over his features. Neither heard the angry steps coming toward their office. The door burst open and an enraged Cowley stood there.

“Just where the bloody hell have you two been for the last 3 hours. I’ve been calling you on the R/T and you’re sitting here bloody wasting time.” Cowley was furious with them.

“Kindly don’t swear in front of my daughter Sir.” Bodie stood up to him.

“Eh!” Cowley said intelligently looking at Katie. Bodie came to the rescue.

“Katie I want you to meet my boss, George Cowley. Sir my daughter Katie O’Hara.” Bodie made the introductions.

“Pleased to meet you Mr. Cowley.” Katie shook his hand and Cowley still looked stunned. It was not often that anyone saw Cowley speechless but he was.

“Very pleased to meet you Katie. You been keeping secrets Bodie?” Cowley said.

“No Sir, I’ve only just found out myself.” Bodie still looked a little shame faced. Cowley noticed the bags on the floor by the desk.

“Where are you staying young Katie?” He asked.

“No idea yet Sir.” Katie replied.

“With me Sir!” Bodie replied at the same time. Cowley gave him a quizzical glance. “Yes I know about the rules Sir but she’s my daughter and she’s not got anywhere else to go at this time of night.” Bodie was not going to give in.

“Very well. I’ll get you a spare door key.” And he left them.

“Mr. Cowley seems very nice.” Katie said as they drove over to Bodie flat. Both men snickered at that comment. Nice was not quite the word they could use. “Don’t you like him?” She asked puzzled.

“Oh he’s alright I guess.” Doyle said “A bit of a tyrant though.”

“Just cause he doesn’t have a life outside of CI5 he reckons no one else has either. Plays havoc with the social life.” Bodie replied pulling into the one vacant car spot left.

“Oh I’ll bet that doesn’t stop either one of you.” Katie said as she climbed out of the Capri.

“That daughter of yours if far too perceptive Bodie.” Doyle said as he picked up her bag.

“Yer isn’t she though.” Bodie said glowing with pride. Doyle just shook his head and wondered towards the flats.

“You won’t get in the door with a head swell like that mate!” He ducked the fist Bodie threw his way and staggered as if he’d hit him. Katie laughed at them playing around.

“Come on luv.” Bodie held the door open for her and led her up the stairs to his flat. “Welcome to your new abode.” Katie wandered in and dropped her handbag on the sofa.

“Oh its so neat and tidy” she said impressed.

“Yer, Mr. Neat Freak here.” Doyle ducked the cushion that Bodie threw at him.

“Come on luv, you room’s through here.” Bodie walked towards the room expecting Katie to follow him. She was paralysed to the spot. “What?” Bodie asked when he realised she wasn’t.

“My room!” She asked astonished. “I thought I was sleeping on the sofa. I’ve got my own room.”

“Of course you do!” Bodie said. “It’s got some of my stuff in it but that’s easily moved. Come on.” Bodie took her hand and lead her to the room.

It was a very plain room really. A double bed, a chest of drawers and two wardrobes, that was it but to Katie it was paradise. She stood in the middle of it staring in disbelief. Bodie and Doyle just stood there watching her. When she turned to face them she had tears in her eyes.

“My very own room. I’ve never ever had my own room before.” The tears finally fell.

“Oh darlin’, come here.” Bodie opened his arms to her and she flew into them.

“Thank you Daddy.” Katie said through her tears. Bodie felt like crying himself. This was all it takes to make her happy; he thought her own room, jeez! Katie smiled at them. She’s even beautiful crying Doyle thought amazed. Not many women could claim that.
