Because the limo was at their disposal, Jean insisted they visit Rodeo Drive. “It’ll be fun, Lionel, to window shop on Rodeo Drive.”

Lionel wasn’t so sure, but he was prepared to do anything she wanted. He couldn’t imagine life without her and if she hadn’t decided to come to Los Angeles with him, the whole mini-series would have gone right down the pan. Their meeting with Sy and Manny and Mike and the rest of the lot was tomorrow morning at eleven. He was hoping that Alistair’s presence, thanks to Jean’s emergency appeal for assistance, would help smooth things along. In the meantime, if Jean wanted to sightsee on Rodeo Drive, Lionel would go along.

They walked along Rodeo Drive, looking at the windows of the fabulous stores that lined the street. Lionel knew that Jean was watching the women; they were uniformly slender, sleek and smooth, and everyone seemed to be perfectly 28 with no lines or wrinkles. He laced his fingers through hers and said in a low voice, “You’re more beautiful than all these women.”

“Thank you. You’re very reassuring.” Then suddenly, “How did you know what I was thinking?”

He shrugged and they continued window-shopping at Armani, Gucci, Chanel, Harry Winston, Tiffany, Cartier, and Bijan. Lionel wanted to buy Jean something special but these stores were out of his price range. He deplored his economic status, almost wishing he were back in Kenya where his funds were significant. They turned the corner onto the department stores that lined Wilshire. At last, Lionel thought, he’d be able to find something for Jean here. Beyond I. Magnin he spied a shop whose wares, he knew, would appeal to Jean as well as to him. He vowed that he’d pay the price without blanching; he hoped his credit card would do the same. Two doormen held open the double doors, granting them entry.

“What made you choose this store?” she asked Lionel.

“Sex.”

She smothered a laugh as a saleswoman approached.

“Good afternoon” She smiled. “Welcome to California Lingerie. I’m Melinda. May I help you?”

“Yes. We’d like to see your selection of corsets and suspender belts.”

Jean shot a look of disbelief at him.

“Of course. I’ll be delighted to assist you. Do you have a preference for fabric or color? We carry lace, silk and leather.”

“Black lace or silk. Jean?” Lionel turned to Jean for her opinion.

She gave it thought and wrinkled her nose. “Not leather. I prefer black, but would like to see what you have available.”

The saleswoman gave a smile. “Of course. I’ll get you settled in a changing room.” She and Jean took just two steps. “The gentleman is welcome to join you if you like.”

“Lionel? Would you like to come with me?”

A grin spread across his face and he fell in behind Jean. The saleswoman smiled and led them to the changing room. There was a platform in front of the tri-fold mirror, three very comfortable armchairs, a small table, and a private toilet. “I’ll be back in a moment. Would you prefer tea or coffee or something else?”

“Mineral water, please” Jean said.

“Mineral water, too. Thank you”, Lionel said.

The saleswoman nodded and left the room, closing the door behind her. Lionel sat in a chair and Jean stood between his legs with her arms about his neck.

“Sometimes, Lionel Hardcastle, you amaze me.”

“Sometimes I amaze myself. You don’t mind my being in here, do you?”

“Mind? Of course not. I rather like it.” She bent her head and kissed him. There was a knock on the door and a waitress entered; she put a tray of mineral water and glasses on the table and left the room.

Jean and Lionel both giggled at the situation. “All this to buy underwear! You’re a lovely man, Lionel.” Jean exclaimed and kissed Lionel slowly, her tongue slipping into his mouth to tease him.

Melinda knocked and entered the room, pulling a small rack behind her. “I’ve brought a variety of corsets that I think you’ll like. Would you like me to assist you?”

“Yes.” Jean removed her dress and slip, to reveal the bra, knickers, suspender belt and stockings.

“That’s beautiful underwear. Harvey Nicks?” Melinda asked.

“Yes. How did you know?”

“Oh! I adore their underclothes. I always stock up when I’m in London.”

“Do you get to London often?”

“At least every other year. More often if I can. Have you been to Los Angeles before?”

Jean removed her bra. “No. This is our first trip. Lionel’s in negotiations to write a television mini-series.”

“That’s wonderful. Good luck with it. I’m sure it’ll be a success.” She took two corsets from the rack and held them out for Jean’s approval.

“That one.” Melinda returned one to the rack and opened the other and laced up the corset Jean had chosen.

Lionel sat silently in his chair, doing his best not to grin like a schoolboy at the sight of Jean barely clad in silk and lace; he hoped his erection wasn’t too obvious and that he wouldn’t have to stand up any time too soon.

“What do you think?” Melinda asked Jean.

“Nice.” Lionel watched her run her hands up her waist to her breasts and would have liked to do the same. “I like the garters so I wouldn’t need a separate suspender belt. And yet. . .” her voice trailed off.

“The garters are fully detachable. Look.” Melinda turned up the bottom of the corset and showed Jean how they were attached. “You can wear it alone or with something else. I think the fit is very flattering.”

“Lionel?” Jean turned from the mirror. “What do you think?”
