Early September, 1990
Two small children, one blonde with a fair complexion, the other a brunette with _mocha_ tinted skin, are sitting on swings, holding hands and sharing a deep conversation.
"So NOW what do you wanna be when you grow up?"
Eight year old Justin Taylor holds his breath slightly as he awaits his best friend's answer.
Just last week she had announced she wanted to be a zookeeper!
Flashing her a smile that could rival the sun, he quickly adds, "You already know what I wanna be right?" he prods.
Little Daphne Chanders tucks a tendril of chestnut-brown curly hair behind her ear and purses her lips, digging her shoes into the sand.
Her toes point inwards, then out, then they dip again to kick up some sand as she's pretending to think very hard.
"Hmm, well I guess so..."
She giggles as Justin gives a sudden small squeak of indignation, and crosses his little arms to stare at her, causing him to quickly grab at the swing because he almost tumbled off backwards.
She says between laughs, "I know what you wanna be Jus, I was just playing!"
"Hey Taylor! Quit hogging the swings!"
Both children roll their eyes, sliding reluctantly off of the swing seats as a large boy and his friends approach them.
"Come on Daph," says Justin as he takes his friends small hand after brushing down both of their school uniforms.
He tries to pull her away from what he knows will only become trouble if they stay.
Cinnamon brown eyes blazing, she jerks her little hand away.
"No Justin! If we don't stand up to him, he'll always win!"
Justin's azure eyes are filled with sadness as he slowly nods his head, and braces himself for what's to come next if they stay.
Justin and Daphne's stomachs feel queasy as heavy footfalls mean the arrival of the schoolyard bully and his pals.
"Soooo, Taylor, I see ya got yer girlfriend with ya again!" Announced Chris Hobbes, a boy the same age as Justin and Daphne.
Looking around at the other children who had now stopped playing to instead watch the little drama unfold, he throws back his dark blonde head as he crows, "See the little baby? He only plays with girls!"
Looking meanly at the smaller boy, who is now shaking visably and clutching the little girls hand, Chris smirks at him and says, "Whatsa matter Taylor, are you such a sissy that you'll only play with girls?"
Grinning, he goes in for the kill.
"What are you, some kind of faggot? You don't play any sports with us boys, all you do every day is play with her!" He bellows pointing a finger at Daphne.
"What is she, your girlfriend?" The taller boy sneers, his lip curling making his normaly handsome face look ugly and mean.
The schoolyard is suddenly so quiet, all Justin can hear is the thumping of his heart as Chris's words vibrate inside his mind.
Looking around at the expectant faces of his peers, he feels tears threatening.
Inside he's wishing with all of his heart that Chris would just leave him and Daphne alone.
She was much more than just a girl friend, she was his special friend, his best friend.
It was like the moment they'd met, he'd known her forever, and he just couldn't imagine his life without her, nor did he ever want to.
Daphne Chanders was the one he told all of his wishes and secrets to.
She never laughed at him when he'd told her in first grade just what he was going to be when he grew up, or at the fact that he'd known so since he could hold a crayon.
Instead, she had fixed him with an intense stare that he'd felt all the way down to his toes as she'd then launched eagerly into her own hopes and dreams.
There were SO many things the little girl wanted to be!
They had spent countless days with each other after that.
Sleep overs, movies, the arcade, dinners at each others homes, and all Holidays too.
Come Valentine's Day, every year after, both Justin and Daphne could count on each other, and they both cherished the cards they made to give to one another.
Yeah, best friends, closer than Batman and Robin, or any other duo, they were special.
He'd fought his dad on the issue, even his other friends just couldn't understand how Justin would want to be friends with a girl, a black girl.
But, when Justin looked at Daphne, he saw so much more than just a pretty little girl.
Daphne was alot like him, she saw things like he did, and with all his heart he loved her for it.
Daphne was smart like him, and knew already what she wanted to be, just like he did, and he'd be damned if his father or that stupid ape Chris Hobbes would stop him from being with her.
After all, those cruel words the bigger boy was spouting were words he was more than familiar with.
But his musings were quickly brought to a halt, and Justin's blue eyes go wide.
"THATS ENOUGH CHRIS HOBBES!"
Quickly dropping Justin's small trembling hand, Daphne screams again,
"THATS ENOUGH YOU CREEP!"
Before anyone can blink, or Chris Hobbes can move, a little blur attacks the larger boy, shoving him down to the dirt, kicking and scratching and biting him.
A whistle suddenly blows and children quickly scatter to avoid being caught up in the mess.
"Mister Hobbes! Miss Chanders! Stop this brawling immediately!" The playground attendant
screeches.
Both rumpled dusty children stand and quickly follow her to the headmasters office.
As she passes by Justin, Daphne gives him a slow wink and a small smirk.
Justin just rolls his eyes and wonders again how he got so lucky to have her in his life.
September, 2000
A loud squeal of tires announces the arrival of a jeep with two passengers.
Daphne Chanders jaw drops as she recognizes the blonde head slowly rising in the back of the viehicle.
Make that three passengers...
A concerned look covers her face as she observes the look in her best friends sparkling blue eyes.
Justin Taylor looks like he's experienced something, something she hasn't yet, and a tiny trendril of jealousy tickles her mind as she hears him softly say, "I've just seen the face of God, and his name is Brian Kinney."
Later that afternoon, they share their lunch period.
Perched high above at their favorite place, she offers him a bite of her vegie wrap, as they watch the football players practice.
Daphne listens intently as between bites of his bananna Justin fills her in on the wonderful 'God' that is Brian Kinney, and she feels herself flush as Justin gives her a very graphic outline of his *first time* and she can't help but grin as he tells her SO much more than she's ever heard about sex.
Especially something she'd never even thought about, gay sex.
Daphne had figured out that Justin was different than most boys long before Chris Hobbes had announced it to the entire class back in third grade.
In fact, the moment she'd met Justin Taylor, she'd decided that they'd always be best friends, and she'd always love him, even if he could never feel for or love her back the same way.
Grinning widely, she rolled her eyes as Justin blushed and stammered when she asked him if he loved this Brian Kinney.
His softly spoken answers brought different feelings out of hiding, but the one that was the strongest was her happiness at his newfound love.
Several months passed as Daphne watched her best friend go through the highs and lows in his one-sided relationship with the older man.
All of the changes Justin went through, and the crazy things he did, just to get the older man's attention.
And, she'd been right there in the thick of it too, encouraging him to go for it and get his man!
She'd even risked getting grounded for him when he'd needed her to drive him to Brian's loft, or to Liberty Avenue, the strictly gay mecca of their city.
She'd even dressed the part in skintight flamboyant clothing and accompanied him to a gay bar called Woody's and a gay dance club called Babylon.
She'd also been there for him when he'd gotten his nipple pierced, even though she'd at first tried to talk him out of it, and Justin had blithely waved away her fears, calling them urban legends and had gone through with it anyway.
For himself, and...For Brian Kinney.
At one point he'd even stole Brian's credit card and ran away to New York after Brian's loft had gotten robbed because supposedly Justin hadn't set the alarm.
He'd asked her to go with him, and she'd wanted to soo badly, but, she knew in her heart her parents would kill her if she had!
It had turned out okay though in the end.
Just like in the fairy tales she and Justin had loved so much as children.
And much to the surprise of Brian himself and his friends, Brian had rescued Justin, and brought him back home to her, and back to Pittsburg.
It hadn't been a happily ever after though.
Brian had moved him into Debbie Novotny's home, and had talked her into giving Justin a job at the Liberty Diner where she worked at so he could pay back the charges on Brian's credit card.
Some Prince, huh?
Well, it could of been worse, Brian could of pressed charges against Justin like Michael Novotny, Debbie's only son and Brian's best friend, wanted him to.
When she'd first seen him, Daphne had thought he was old and too skinny.
But, as Justin brought her into his world, the gay world, she soon found Brian Kinney to be just as hot and just as facinating as Justin had first explained him to be.
And, now that Justin was a knowledgable person that was having regular sex, and alot of it according to Justin, Daphne had made up her mind about something.
So, after asking Justin, and after he'd agreed, both teens now find themselves climbing up the stairs leading to Justin's room, Michael's old room.
After inviting her inside, Justin closes the door, and shows her where to place her backpack.
He offers to play some music, and both of them are nervous, as he's sliding in the disc.
As the small room's filled to a sultry beat, he offers her an out.
"If, you don't wanna do this..." Justin says, his words tapering off.
Holding out his hands, he shrugs at her.
"No, no , I, I do," she replies.
Giving him a reasuring grin, she sets down her bookbag, and slightly shrugs back, asking him if he has any condoms.
The building tension leaves the room as both teens snicker after he softly says, "Are you kidding?"
Sitting now, side by side on the small bed, they undress slowly, both promising to each other that things won't get wierd between them afterwards.
Hesitantly, the two best friends share their first real kiss.
It's both their first times.
Hers with a boy, and his with a girl.
Smiling, they are now in bed, under the dark blue covers, with Justin poised above her.
Carefully, slowly, he moans as he enters her body, and Daphne is filled with a sudden sharp pain, that soon turns to pleasure.
Justin is amazed at the tightness of her body as his cock enters her wetness.
Both teens gasp as the feelings envelope them.
Trailing hot little kisses from her lips to her throat, and across her breasts, Justin is filled with happiness, knowing now that he can give Daphne her first time, and that they both as friends, can experience this amazing closeness.
Smiling down into her lovely face, he see's the pleasure he's bringing her and it makes him feel good too, as he carefully moves inside her with a rhythm they both are enjoying.
A couple of months pass, and things go back to normal, despite some wierdness at first.
Justin smiles as Daphne walks into the diner.
"Hey!" He says, giving her a 'Sunshine' smile.
He was SO happy to see her as he'd been busy lately, and had missed his best friend's smile.
Although he'd left her several messages on her cell, and with her folks, she had only returned a few, saying she too had been busy with work and stuff too, and that she promised they'd have a movie night soon.
But, another excuse, and another week had passed.
It had seemed to him, she'd been avoiding him these last couple of weeks.
The last time he'd seen her face to face had been at her work.
They had at first, exchanged some heated words, and her calling him a 'fulltime Homosexual' had stung a bit.
But, he wanted her to know, it had been much more than just a fuck to him, and sending her an email stating his feeling on the subject, seemed too impersonal.
He'd done 'it' as a 'favor' to her.
So that her first time would be easier, much more special than 'just a fuck' the way Brian had admitted to him he'd only felt for Justin.
Even though deep down, both of them knew the older man had been lying through his pearly whites.
Although she now seems more self assured in some ways, something is up, he can just feel it.
Especially when she doesn't return his grin.
You don't have a best friend and not just know when somethings not quite right.
And from the look in her brown eyes he knows.
He just knows.
At her softly spoken, "Justin, we need to talk..."
Her words cement themselves into his brain.
His stomach drops to his toes as he finds himself saying loudly,
"Deb, I need to take my 15 minute smoke break now!"
Not even waiting for her answer, he grabs Daphne's hand and they both head outside,
out back to the alley.
