Jo McGuire sighed as she handed her daughter, Lizzie her heavy backpack as Lizzie was just about to take off and leave for her best friend, Miranda’s house. Lizzie was on her way to meet Miranda and her other best friend, Gordo to work on a group project. It was near dark when Lizzie was about to head out.
“Lizzie, are you sure you don’t want a ride over to Miranda’s?” Jo asked her.
Lizzie rolled her eyes. “Mom, I told you. Miranda’s house is only about two blocks away from here. It’s not far from here.”
“I know that, honey. It’s nearly dark.”
“I’ll be able to make it to Miranda’s before dark. When we’re done, her mom is going to take Gordo and me home so we don’t have to worry about walking alone in the dark.”
Jo sighed and shook her head. “Well, I’m just glad that Miranda’s mom is going to be home so that you and Gordo have a ride home. Just be careful and walk safely there. You know, look before you cross the streets…” her mother continued with her daughter rolling her eyes again. “Make sure you watch for traffic, stay on the side of the road, don’t bump into any mailboxes…”
“DAD!!!!!!!!!!!!” Lizzie screamed. If only she could just get someone down there to help shut her mom up! Her brother, Matt looked up in the living room at his sister with a big grin on his face. He sworn that was the biggest mouth he’d ever seen! Immediately, they all heard hurried stomping coming down the stairs. Lizzie and Matt looked up as their father, Sam McGuire came running down the stairs.
“You called for me, Lizzie?” he asked, alert.
Lizzie sighed and looked over at her father. Before she could say anything, Matt cut in with a smile. “Yeah, Lizzie sat on a mousetrap again. Her boyfriend, Gordo, set it there on a chair in the kitchen so she can get running down the street just to meet him,” he smirked.
“Matt!” Jo snapped.
“Shut up!” Lizzie scowled at her brother.
“You shut up!” Matt shot back.
“Hey, you two! That’s enough!” she snapped at the children. “Now, Matt, you be nice to your sister. After all, you were upset about the fact that Lizzie was gone in Rome for so long so we all know how much you love her. Don’t pick on your sister now that she’s back.”
“Sorry,” Matt said quietly and almost embarrassed. He hadn’t let Lizzie known that he had “missed” her during her Rome trip Lizzie took recently with Gordo.
“Matt actually missed me?” Lizzie was puzzled and wondered to herself. She thought that Matt would be so glad that Lizzie was in Rome and wished she would stay there forever. Oh, whatever. Lizzie took the backpack from her mother and was on her way out the door.
