L is for love

The evening had barely begun at the local lesbian bar, and already six girls were knocking back their drinks like alcohol was soon to become a banned substance. Alice, always the one to be in charge, kept her eye on the others to make sure no-one was lagging behind in the drinking stakes. Jenny, by far the most inexperienced of the group in many ways, seemed already the worse for wear after three tequilas and a good few beers. Dana, as ever, seemed to be wishing that she could become part of the wall so that no-one would notice she was there. Shane of course had her eyes fixed on the door so that she’d be the first to spot any new talent, or you might say prey, coming in. Bette and Tina just seemed comfortable in each others company. It had taken a while for them to get over Bette’s betrayal and the events that followed. But they seemed to have got through it. Their gentle interlocking of fingers signalled the fact that they were indeed back together, and the smiles on their faces were only partly due to the amount of alcohol they’d consumed.

“So who’s up for another round of….tequila?!” Alice smiled gleefully round at her friends, most of whom seemed to groan in response.

“I suppose one more won’t hurt, I’ll get them in this time” offered Bette, getting up and moving towards the bar.

“Hey Bette” Shane called after her, nodding at Jenny, who was rapidly slipping down in her chair, “maybe you’d better just make that five!”

Bette made her way to the bar, and was quickly served by the young barwoman.

“Five tequilas…and a glass of water” she added turning to look at Jenny, who was appearing more and more intoxicated by the minute.

“You certainly aren’t holding back” The voice came from directly behind Bette, and was all too familiar. She froze for a minute, not knowing what to do. The drinks were on the other side of her, and there was no way she could just walk back to the others without them. She had no choice but to turn and face the past.

“Candace” she stated flatly, “it’s been a while”

Back at the table the girls were trying to contain their laughter at Jenny’s incoherent ramblings about her new found sexuality.

“It all…just clicked…I mean…you know…clicked….and I knew…I really did…it all made sense…”

“Which is more than you’re doing right now!” sniggered Shane.

Alice glared at Shane before putting her hand on Jenny’s shoulder, “maybe I should get you home now, Jen”

“Honestly, I’m fine….I just need some air…whoa” Jenny fell straight to the floor as she tried to get up “I guess maybe you should take me home” she looked up sheepishly.

“You guys have a good night and I shall see you tomorrow” said Alice as she got a hold of Jenny.

“Night guys” was all Dana could manage before she, Shane and Tina were in fits of giggles.

“Well I guess I should go tell Bette to hold off on Alice’s tequila” said Tina, getting up as she watched Alice usher Jenny out of the door.

“You shouldn’t be here, you can’t stay” pleaded Bette.

“It’s a free country, Bette. You can go where you want, sleep with who you want…” Candace trailed off as she looked up and down Bette’s body.

“No, no you can’t!” exclaimed Bette, feeling slightly violated.

“Well you sure did. Unless I’m very much mistaken, you chose to sleep with me”

“I shouldn’t have done. I shouldn’t have hurt Tina”

“But you did. You can’t turn back the clock”

“Please just go” Bette’s voice was barely audible.

“When will you stop lying to yourself Bette?” she moved closer “You’re asking me to leave, but you’re eyes tell a different story. You want me. You can’t hide it”

“Don’t do this. Please,” a tear trickled down Bette’s cheek.

“What’s done is done. You already hurt Tina. What more can you lose? You might as well do what you want.”

“Tina and I are back together” Bette tried to put all of her energy behind the statement.

Candace laughed “Then your relationship’s hardly perfect is it? I mean you’re here with me. Tell me honestly,” her hands moved, one to Bette’s cheek and one on her back “What do you really feel?”

Neither of them noticed Tina watching in silence, the tears starting to pour down her cheeks.
