Chapter One
style='mso-spacerun:yes'> A young woman hurried across an empty parking
lot to a lone car. “Damn skirt” she
mumbled. She shuffled through her keys trying to find the one for the car.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “I’m going to be late for that stupid
interview…” she
continued murmuring. She
found her key at last and took off towards the mountains.
~*~
“Look, there’s a General
Hammond inside expecting me.” She
explained to the security guard for the 15th time.
“I’m sorry miss but I
can’t let you enter without proper security clearance.”
“Alright, listen
carefully. I don’t care if I’m not on
your list. Go over to that phone and
call General Hammond. I’m already late.”
“Miss…”
“I swear to God if you call
me miss again I’ll shoot you. Go over
and use the freaking phone now. If he
says he doesn’t know who I am you can arrest me.”
Th'>The guard seemed to think
that was fair enough and went over to the phone.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> After speaking into it for several minutes he
returned to her car window.
“I’m sorry mi… ma’am for
any inconvenience I may have caused you.”
He then opened the gate for her to pass.
Two elevators and another
irritating guard later, she finally reached General Hammond’s office.
“I’m sorry I’m late sir.”
“It’s alright, take a
seat Ms. Larkey.”
She did as asked.
“Do you know why you’re
here?”
“Well, I’m not entirely
sure. Supposedly this facility is used
for deep space radar research or some such nonsense as that.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> So, either I’m here to make up a better cover
story or something else.”
“Well, as bad as our
cover story is, the Pentagon has picked you for other reasons.”
“Then, I guess it’s
because of my training at NASA.”
“Partly.”style='font-family:Tahoma'>
“What use could you possibly
have for my NASA training inside of a mountain?”
“You would be surprised
Ms. Larkey.
So, do you want the job or not?”
“I don’t even know what
the job is yet.”
“I can’t disclose that
information until you accept the job.”
“General, as I’m sure you
already know I am quite good at keeping secrets.”
“I imagine you are.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> But, I still cannot reveal anything until you
accept the position.”
“What position is that?”
“Something else I cannot
say.”
She leaned back in her
chair thinking. “I’ll take the job, now
tell me the details.”
teams, but in a way you will also be your own team.”
“Ah, I knew that part of
my past would once again haunt me.”
“If anything goes wrong
and a team or team member is captured, you will go in and retrieve them.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> If there is an artifact or class=SpellE>intel we need, that too you will
retrieve alone.”
“I don’t know how much
help I could possibly be. I retired
because my face became too known.
Practically every world leader had a file on me.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I left the CIA and changed my name because it
was either quit or be killed.”
“Don’t worry Ms. class=SpellE>Larkey; you will be going places where no one knows you.”
“What makes you think I
even want to go back to that life? I
practically had to hide in a hole for 2 years of my life while people forgot
about Agent Kelseystyle='font-family:Tahoma'>. When I
resurfaced, the Pentagon offered me a job at NASA.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I’m even on top of their list of people to go
on deep space missions once cyro-sleep is perfected.”
“Trust me; I’m sure
you’ll love the job.”
him. “Ready to meet
your new team?”
“I suppose so.”
“They’ve already been
briefed on your history and given a file on you.”
“Pretty certain I was
going to take the job were we?”
“No,
just hopeful.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> This brings me to one other thing.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I want you to test security in the mountain
and update it in any ways you feel fit.”
“Oh, your guards seem to
be doing their jobs just fine. Annoy
people so much that they just give up and go away.”
General Hammond opened a
large door that led into a conference room.
“Ms. Larkey,
meet Colonel Jack O’Neill, Major Samantha Carter, Dr. Daniel Jackson, and class=SpellE>Teal’c. SG-1 class=GramE>meet Nadine Larkey, your newest
team member.”
She gave them all a half
smile. “If you’ll forgive me General, I
haven’t had time to read the contents of the folder you just gave me.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I still have no idea what I’m a team member
of.”
Jack seemed to take this
as his cue to give his two cents. “Well,
you see, we have this big ring thing that opens tunnels to other planets with a
ring thing like ours.”
She stared at him for a
moment. “Now, would someone like to tell
me what I’m really doing here?”
“Actually, Jack pretty
much got it right.” Daniel rubbed the
back of his neck. “Umm…”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> He stood up and pushed a button on the wall,
the blast door rose and revealed the Stargate.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “You see, we use that to travel to other
planets. It basically opens a wormhole
between our world and the one we wish to go to.
Uh, that’s pretty much it.” He
sat back down.
“Well, if you ask me, I
think you’re all mad.”
“Indeed we are not
angry. We are only telling you of what
you are now a part of. class=GramE>Helping the Tau’ri destroy the class=SpellE>Goa’Uld.”
“Teal’c
I think you may be getting a little ahead of us here.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> And she was calling us crazy, not
angry.” Daniel told him.
“I see.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Teal’c then sat in
silence.
It took well over an hour
to finally explain everything to Nadine and make her believe it.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> She was given all of the mission reports and
other files to read to help better understand.
She was walking around
the SGC trying to get her bearings when Daniel caught up to her.
“So, you were in the
CIA?”
She quickened her
pace. “Nope.”
“Uh
huh.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Well, it said so in your file.”
“Then why did you ask
me?”
“To see what you would
say. What was it like?”
She smiled.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “I’m afraid that’s classified.”
“Well, did you enjoy it?”
“Classified.”style='font-family:Tahoma'>
“Were you any good at
it?”
“Classified.”style='font-family:Tahoma'>
“Is it all really
classified or are you just saying that to make me go away?”
“Pick one.”
“You’re not very
friendly.”
“I know.”
“Why is that?”
“Because
I don’t trust anyone.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> She walked away then leaving Daniel alone.
“You have to learn to
trust your team!” He called after her.
“Alright, where’s miss
007?” Jack was looking at his
watch. SG-1 was standing at the bottom
of the gate ramp waiting.
“You’d think she’d be on
time considering this is her first mission with
us.” Carter added.
The door opened and
Nadine came in. She was dressed entirely
in black.
“Sorry I’m late, I couldn’t
find the arsenal.”
“I take it you never
found it judging by your lack of an M-80.”
“No, I found it.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I’m armed and ready to go.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> So, let’s go.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> She walked up the ramp and stepped through
the gate, SG-1 followed suit.
“Wow, trees.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Nadine sounded unimpressed.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> “So, where are the class=SpellE>Goa’Uld?”
“There aren’t
necessarily Goa’Uld on every planet we visit.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Daniel chimed in.
She lowered her gun.
“Then what the hell am I doing here?”
“Being
one of the team.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Jack smiled.
She walked several meters
from the gate. The rest of SG-1 class=GramE>were also walking but, much farther behind her. She suddenly
drew her gun. “Freeze!”
“Oh,
for cryin’ out loud.”style='font-family:Tahoma'> Jack came
running to her side with the rest of SG-1.
There was an Unas
that had ventured out of the woods a few feet away.
“Is that a class=SpellE>Goa’Uld?” She asked
Daniel in a hushed voice.
“No, that’s class=GramE>an Unas and you’re scaring
it.” He pushed her gun down.
When it began moving
again, she brought her gun back up.
“Oh, for class=SpellE>cryin’-Daniel, take her gun away.”
“Jack, if you want to
take the gun out of an ex-CIA agent’s hand, you go for it.”style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Daniel sure wasn’t going to chance getting
shot.
Let’s just say their
first mission together didn’t go so well.
