How it began

Part 1
They were working late together – again. Nina didn’t mind. There was no one waiting for her at home but she knew it was different for Jack. He hated it and his wife and daughter wanted him to be at home a lot more than he was. Still, tonight he didn’t seem to mind. He was tired but in a good mood – maybe because they were finally getting somewhere in the case.
She had gone out to get them something to eat and when she came back she found him in his office surrounded by scattered files, papers and folders.
“What are you looking for?”
“The report from Dallas…”
“I gave it to you yesterday”, she said.
“I know, I know…” He rubbed his eyes.
“Tired?”
“Yeah… Oh, great! Food…” His face lit up as he saw what she was carrying. “Indian – good choice.”
Nina knew he liked it and it was her favourite too. She tried to put it down on the desk but there were papers everywhere.
He saw what she was trying to do and laughed. “Sit on the floor?”
She smiled and nodded. There were documents all over the floor too but she found a place to sit and unpacked the bag.
The smell of spicy chicken made his stomach growl and he sat down on the floor opposite her and grabbed one of the boxes.
“Now all that is missing is the cold beer”, he said and she smiled again.
“Sorry, about that – water or iced tea?”
He knew she preferred water so he went with the iced tea.
They sat quiet for a while, busy trying to calm the worst hunger, but then he wanted to get back to work and took a big bite out of his naan bread and a sip of iced tea before he started to tell her what he had found and why he needed that report. She nodded and used a napkin to clean her hands before she started searching the piles on the floor next to her.
“Jack, you should really try and keep things neat in here – it would make this a whole lot easier.”
“I know… but…” he stopped as he was suddenly distracted.
She never noticed how his eyes left the files and travelled to her legs. She had taken of her shoes and the way she was sitting now revealed a lot more thigh than she was aware of. Jack couldn’t take his eyes of her; it was as if he suddenly noticed just how sexy she was… He had always found her attractive but had never really allowed himself to think about her that way. They worked so well together, he respected her, admired her and trusted her – and he was married. The thought of Teri made him quickly lower his gaze to the papers in his hand again. He was tired and he was just a man after all… He knew most men in the office used to look at her and he would never dream of doing anything about it, would he?
“Here it is”, she said triumphantly and held a heavy folder out to him.
He took it from her. “What would I do without you? You are better at my job than I am… I’ll probably end up working for you one day soon!”
She laughed at his comments and took a sip of water.
Jack opened the folder and searched through the papers. “Here… Look at this…”
He held the paper out but she couldn’t see what he was pointing at. She moved closer until she was right next to him, leaning in with one hand on his thigh for support. Now she was able to read the paragraph next to his finger.
He stopped breathing when he felt her small hand on his thigh, when she leaned in he could smell her hair and the faint fragrance of her shampoo. Desire welled up from nowhere and he froze. He couldn’t move – didn’t want to move. He almost moaned when she suddenly took his hand – but only to move it from the next paragraph so that she could continue reading. He looked down at the nape of her neck, realising he wanted to kiss her right there.
When she nodded he was jerked back to reality. She looked up at him and their eyes met.
One second, two seconds, three seconds… suddenly it dawned on them that something was different. None of them looked away, none of them spoke. Without thinking he leaned in and kissed her. When she didn’t resist his hand moved to the back of her head and he pulled her closer, deepening the kiss.
She closed her eyes and gave in to the sensation of his mouth on hers, her hand grasping his thigh harder as she pressed herself closer.
Her response, the way she eagerly opened her mouth to let his tongue in, the way her hand clutched his thigh made him groan with desire. He wanted her so badly - and he wanted her now. He broke the kiss and started to push her onto her back – right on top of all the files.
He was just about to kiss her again when he caught a glimpse of his hand in her hair. The wedding ring. The gold was reflected in the light… Shocked he pulled away. What was he doing?
Nina’s eyes flew open as she felt him pulling away. She was panting and so was he when he finally spoke.
“I’m sorry, Nina…” He looked down at his hands, fingers tracing the ring, turning it around his finger.
She saw what he was doing and knew what he was thinking. She moved away from him.
“Look Jack, it’s late and…”
“…we’re tired…” he filled in.
“... yeah…”
He looked up and into her eyes. She saw he was embarrassed and she wanted to reassure him that everything was fine.
“Nothing really happened, Jack”, she whispered, unsure if her voice would carry.
“I don’t know what came over me…”
“It’s OK… We should probably get out of here… Go home and get some sleep…”
He nodded. He hoped he hadn’t ruined everything now. This had been just so stupid and he couldn’t believe himself. “I don’t want this to turn awkward for you… Are we OK?”
She gave him a faint smile. “Yes Jack, we’re OK. Let’s just forget about it. It never happened…” She got up, gathered the empty food cartons and threw them in the trash before putting her shoes back on. “I’ll get going… if you want I’ll take the Dallas report with me home and…”
“No, no, that’s not necessary… It can wait until tomorrow – we won’t crack this case tonight anyway…”
“OK, I’ll see you tomorrow…”
“Yeah, see you tomorrow…”
She was gone and he was still sitting on the floor of his office wondering what he had done…
