A Song Without Words

I was sitting in the Lounge minding my own business eating some Crispy M&M's thinking, that my life couldn't possibly be more complicated.
Then she walked in. This gorgeous little red head, that I respected openly and loved secretly for years. She alone was the reason none of my relationships worked out. I was getting practice. Just so I'd know I'd be good enought for her. But from my point of view, I was a long way off.
"Abby I thought you were off today" she said in greeting upon realizing I was in the same room.
"I couldn't stay home" I said simply, I always felt so dumb around her.
"Oh well feel free to help out. There haven't been many serious truama's today. Just some bumps and bruises" Kerry said crossing to her locker.
She looked tired. Almost dead on her feet. I noticed this after I saw the purple bags beneath her eyes. Even with the imperfections I thought her beaut.
\.
"On your way home?" I asked dumbly when she pulled out her coat. Another cold October day.
"Yeah my shift ended 3 hours ago" She shrugged it on, I wanted to help her, just to steal the power I knew was in her weary shoulders "I was doing paperwork"
"Oh. The bane of the doctors existence, paperwork" I joked rising from my slouch "You look beat"
"Yeah I am. I caught the El in last night" Kerry frowned her beautiful face "Not looking forward to the ride home"
"I could drive you" I could barely conceal my excitement I had a possible chance to be in a very close vicinity with the love of my life. She just didn't know I loved her.
"I don't want to put you out Abby" Keryy smiled at me. A tired smile "I can ride the El"
"Aw don't be brave, I'll drive. I"m parked close" I begged "We'len sen stop for Ice Cream" I teased. I didnt want to seem desperate.
"Okay. But only for the Ice Cream" Kerry grabbed her crutch and her purse.
"Ah yes Ice Cream sooths the Savage Weaver" I joked pulling on my own coat over the heavy sweater I wore.
"Don't tell anyone" she stage whispered "It's my only weakness"
I smiled. She was actually quite human when she wasn't working. I wondered if she took charge even in bed. I blushed. I'd probably never find out.
"So" she asked sidling up on me "what soothes the Savage Lockhart?"
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you" I doubt she'd figured she soothed me.
"Try me" she shot back.
"Guess"

Everyone used to think I was crazy to want Ice Cream on the cold Chicago days of late Autumn.
Kerry thought Ice Cream and the weather didn't matter. Sometimes you just had to have it.
"I never thought of you as a person who ate Sugar Free Ic Cream" she remarked to me after we left the Parlor.
"I never thought you'd chose Double Fudge Brownie" i nudged her good side with my elbow "I guess we're contrary"
"Yeah" She said around a soft smile "Two of a kind"

I'd never seen her house. At least not the inside. Carter said it was great. Even though he lived in her basement apartment.
She was neat. The entire place was spotless. I guess dust doesn't mess with Kerry Weaver. It's to smart for that.
She had pictures everywhere. They were on the tables, the walls, even a few on the doors. They ranged from people todlifdlife. Some were plaques, even pieces of finished wood with odd symbols etched into them.
"What's this?" I asked when one particularly beautiful plaque caught my eye.
"It's a test. Given to me by a great Hagad about 20 years ago" She touched the plaque gently. This ones wood was unfinished, but it was smooth and had a natural sheen to it.
"What kinda test" I looked at the symbols from every angle but coudln't make heads of tails of what it said.
"It's a test with one question. You have a lifetime to answer it" she explained.
"Wow" I smirked "That's some test"

I didn't want to leave, and she wasn't exactly pushing me out the door. So I figured I'd stay until my welcome wore out. It was going on dinner time and our rapport had yet to wain. She was very good company.
"So he just ran around the whole village naked" she finished her story.
I hadn't really heard it. I was too caught up in the nuance of her voice. Following the slight lilt the hidden accent I didn't know she had. I think I laughed in all the right places. She didn't seem like she noticed my attention wasn't on the story.
"Must of been great" I smiled and chuckled. She'd been telling me stories about her time in Africa. The people she'd met, helped and loved. The children and their games. I'd picked up on one thing. She was lonely. "You seem like you miss it. Africa I mean"
"I do. I hope to go back someday" she has this faraway look in her eyes.
"I hope you do too" anything that would make her happy. I'd pay for the damn trip myself just to see her smile like she was doing now.
"Oh I've kept you here all day" she blushed nearly as red as her hair.
"I didn't notice" I really hadn't. When I was around her, time didn't matter anymore.
"Well it's almost dinner" she stood and headed for her kitchen "Would you like to stay and eat with me?"
My heart stopped, I'd just been asked to eat with the woman of my dreams "Of course. I hear your a regular chef"
"Carter talks to much" she laughed entering the kitchen "He thinks all free food is made by a chef"
"Kinda odd for a rich boy" I joked following her in. Like the rest of the house the kitchen was spotless.
"He's a man honey. Free food makes them all starving and appreciative" she explained as she dice some kind of vegetable. I was too busy staring at her firm ass in the black pants she was wearing.
I made a sound of agreement I think. She went on.
"Feed a man and he'll do anything for you" she moved onto another veggie, or maybe it was a meat.
I made another sound. Apparently it didn't sound healthy because she turned and caught me looking.
"You okay Abby?" She sounded genuinely worried.
"I-I-I'm fine" I stuttered a guilty blushed spread across my cheeks.
"Were you checking out my ass?" she questioned suddenly.
I though perhaps she'd had too much to drink. I hadn't had any but answered honestly hoping she'd be to far gone to remember this tomorrow "Yeah. I couldn't help it. Those tight pants your wearing"
She chuckled and dropped the knife. She did a pretty good swagger towards me. Maybe it was just made sexier by the limp I knew she had, a practiced trait perhaps.
"I've always wondered about you Abby" she said coming up so close to me I could smell the wine on her breath.
"Wondered what?" I choked out. With her that close to me I was lucky I could think, much less talk.
"You never seemed happy in your relationships. Luka was too sad, Carter is too young" she waved her hand as she walked away from me only to return seconds later "It's like you purosely chose the wrong one"
"Maybe it was practice" I was so nervous I was honest to a fault.
"Practice for what" She asked seating herself next to me and taking my hand.
"For the right one" I said softly, hoping she wouldn't hear.
"Make sure you know what mistakes not to make" she mulled over this "good theory. But you make yourself miserable in the process. You might be to cynical for the 'right' one before you find him" she patted my hand before running her softly deft fingers over the palm.
"Her" I corrected "To cynical for 'her'."
Kerry's face changed in a matter of seconds. I was startled when she began to sing "A dream is a wish, your heart makes, when your fast asleep" she sighed "I guess wishes really do come true"
"Huh" she'd totally lost me there.
"I always wished I'd have a chance with you" she sighed heavily "I wanted to teach you to love" she paused for a moment, a thoughtful look crossed her delicate features "I don't know why I've had the notion"
"Maybe because you love me" I said hoping this wasn't one of the dreams she's just sang about.
"I love you" Kerry stated flatly "I just didn't think I had a chance. I'm sure this is a dream. So why not take advantage of it"
'Oh yeah' I thought when she began kissing me 'definately won't remember this tomorrow'

I knew it wasn't a dream. I woke in the middle of the night. My stomach was growling but I ignored it. I dra drawn back to the strange plaque she'd told me about earlier. I carressed the unfinished wood as tenderly as I'd carressed Kerry's body earlier. Something about it kept drawing me back.
I didn't know why. In the last few hours my greatest dream, and wildest fantasy had come ture. I'd made love to Kerry Weaver, the woman of my dreams. Six times.
She's moaned 'I love you' every time in several different languages. I know because I stopped and asked. She didn't enjoy that part.
Maybe it was because that plaque meant something special to her. I don't know. But I saw it in her eyes when she'd touched in. It was almost the same look she'd given me when she'd explored my body. First with her eyes, then her fingers, and finally her tongue. I had to reek of sex. Not that there was anyone there to smell me.
I went back to her. My sleeping beauty. She lay sprawled across the bed. I climbed back in spooning her.
"Abby?" She mumbled coming awake partially.
"I'm here love, rest" I whispered. I didn't feel so dumb anymore.
"I though it was a dream"

When morning came it wasn't awkward. She awakened to my tender kisses and smiled.
"I'm so glad it wasn't a dream" she mumbled pulling down on her again.
"Maybe I'm dreaming" I teased.
She pinched me.
"No" I chuckled "I'm definately awake"
She pushed her hand down between us "Oh yeah, your awake"
I blushed. I couldn't really help myself, my entire body was flush up against her compact form. She was ,unsurprisingly, firmly muscled. Must be all those trauma patients she shifts between beds.
I thought I knew Kerry Waever well enough to say I love her. I couldn't have been more wrong. Out of the ER she was a surprisingly tender and loving woman. Insecure in some ways.
I loved her more for it.
"We should get up" she mumbled but didn't move "I should cook you breakfast since I didn't feed you last night"
"Your awfully calm about this" I remarked when she finally rose off of me.
"Why wouldn't I be? My dream came true" she smiled and kissed me "I have you. Don't I?" I saw panic enter her gaze.
"Always"

She really is a good cook. Breakfast was deliscious. She promised that next time I could eat 'off' her. I didnt' have a problem with that.
But I was once again drawn to the plaque.
"Kerry?"
"Yes baby" she sent a shiver down my spine with the endearment.
"This test. What's the question on it?" I het out out for her to see.
"It says: "How do you sing a song without words?"
"Oh" I considered this for a second "I think I know the answer"
"You do? I have it for 20 years and I still can't figure it out. So tell me: "How do you sing a song without words?"
I sighed and took her in my arms "Find someone to love, who'll teach them to you"
